How many times can you burn "protected AAC" to CDs...?

How many times can you burn Apple iTunes Store's music files (Protected AAC) to a CD? Seven?

Mac Mini, Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Yeap, seven (7) shots, that's all you get. My advice, as soon as you download from i-tunes burn the album/CD, and then reimport it again when you need to copy more songs, but I would do only from the imported one's

So you can reimport the songs over and over off a copied CD? Take the iTunes and burn them to a CD and then reimport them? Is there a limit to that process?

Just curious. I'm not the kind to burn whole albums and give away lots of music. I like to give friends sampler CDs, which I think encourages music purchases.

You can burn one particular playlist seven times. Individual songs can be burned an unlimited number of times.

Burning a backup of the files is also an excellent idea. You can burn both data and audio discs.

I'm confused now...

So I can put any of the individual songs onto a playlist and burn it to a CD and do it an infinite number of times? But if I put all the songs I purchased as a group on a CD, then I just get seven burns?

You don't get unlimited burns of a single playlist including any tracks from the iTunes Music Store, no,

Any given playlist that contains a track or tracks purchased from the iTunes Music Store can be burned a maximum of seven times. After that, you either have to alter the playlist (add or remove a track of any type, iTMS or imported) or create a new playlist with the iTMS track(s) you wish to burn. That playlist can also be burned up to seven times. Etc. etc.

Note that this only applies when you're burning an audio CD. You can burn your iTMS tracks as data for backup an infinite number of times. Though of course those data disks won't play in a CD player.

Hope this clears things up.

Let me see if I have it right. (Thanks for all the help, too.)

I recently purchased 25 iTunes and they appeared on a playlist that iTunes automatically labeled "Purchased." Now that list as a whole can be copied as is 7 times.

But if I create a new playlist using some of the songs I have putchased, mixing purchased songs with other songs I mave have imported from CDs I own, that new playlist can also be burned 7 times.

And again, if I alter that playlist by adding or subtracting songs, I have a new list that can be burned 7 times...Or if I create a new playlist using different songs I've purchased, I get 7 burns....

This process can be repeated infinitely: a new playlist = 7 burns, so long as the content is altered in some way.....

Is that right?

Exactly!

Keep in mind that there is no restriction when burning a playlist to a DATA CD/DVD as this format is (also) intended for backup purposes.

Understand of course that any CD you burn must be for your personal use only. You cannot burn CDs containing your tracks and give them away. So in most cases, seven burns of any given track from the iTMS should be more than enough.

I burned purchased music to a DVD. 4 gigs worth. I want to import them as MP3's. Creating a new user account, I open iTunes, insert the DVD I see all of the music, but the Import button doesn't appear. There is no way to import the music into iTunes. I can drag an drop into iTunes, but my goal is to import them as MP3's.

Any idea why I can import the protected music from a DVD in iTunes?

You cannot convert a protected track by burning them to a data disk. The only way to convert them is to burn them to an audio CD, which can then import as you would a normal CD.
