iMac 7.1 memory

I have this iMac and I am running Snow Leopard.

Model Name:iMac

Model Identifier:iMac7,1

Processor Name:Intel Core 2 Duo

Processor Speed:2 GHz

Number Of Processors:1

Total Number Of Cores:2

L2 Cache:4 MB

Memory:1 GB

Bus Speed:800 MHz

Boot ROM Version:IM71.007A.B03

How much memeory can this be increased? Some say that it can be only increased to GB.

I would like to know if that is true?

The Apple spec's say 4GB,

iMac (Mid 2007) - Technical Specifications

however OWC has and sales a tested 6GB kit for that model.

Hi,

I've been researching upgrading the memory in my iMac 2.8 extreme (7,1), and just saw that someone suggested that with Lion these machines can see 8gb. I can't find the link right now, but I think it was on I fixit.com.

Anyone have any thoughts on whether it might work?

Cheers,

Kev.

I'd be wary. Never heard of them and there are some bad reviews from Mac users.

If you're in UK, Crucial may be a better bet, albeit a bit more expensive.

Cheap RAM often turns out to be factory seconds (having failed final quality control) from major manufacturers and rebranded.

Kingston can be OK, too, but not the ValueRam range - stick with the premium ranges.

Hi again. Well, you were right, of course. I went with the Komputerbay module (some of the reviews were positive, and it was much cheaper than the Crucial version), but alas it didn't work (imac kept crashing and rebooting at startup).

I thought it was worth a punt, but it's on its way back, and I'll buy a crucial module with the refund.

Cheers,

Kev.
