Is MacKeeper safe to use?

Since starting with Facebook my computer is gradually getting slower and slower. Sitting and waiting for the cute little pinwheel to go away is aggravating at the least. I keep getting ads for MacKeeper...... is it safe to use? It is worth the effort?

I clear the cache etc. every couple days and reset Safari every week or two. It will run okay for a couple days and then I'm back to getting the pinwheel.

I also run 10.4.11 (Tiger), and although I have more recent OS's on a G-5 tower, I find Tiger is just more reliable and user friendly, so I stay with what works on my PowerBook G-4. I also have only 1 GB of memory, and have no problems running 2 or 3 programs while on-line. Nobody has mentioned this, but I know for a fact that if you build a new directory with DiskWarrior, you will not only speed up the Mac, but you will love the reliability. If you want to prove it to yourself, take desktop photos of your hard disk graph, (generated by DiskWarrior) before and after. It really is amazing. I also run either MacJanitor, or MacTuneUp, at least once a month. But you have got to get DiskWarrior for 10.4 -10.5. Sooner or later it will be critical to you. I bought mine off e-bay for $40. I also noticed that you are running Safari. I dumped that for FireFox last year and things are a bit faster for it. Hope this helps.

Just wanted to add something else that I found very helpful. It is this link to an article "Optimizing This Mac". It was written for OS 10.4 and the tip about cleaning out the startup files really was helpful. I had no idea that some applications have the ability to add themselves to my startup file without my knowledge. Cleaning this out sped me up about 30%. http://lowendmac.com/eubanks/07/0312.html
