restriction passcode retrieval
iPhone 4, iOS 5.0.1
The passcode cannot be retrieved. You'll need to restore the iPhone as a new device (i.e. not using a backup).
Regards.
how do you do this with an ipad? I have an ipad and it's never been loaded with itunes, my girls forgot passcode to open so I can't do anything.....Help
The same applies to the iPhone, iPod Touch, and the iPad. All run iOS.
If you don't know the Restrictions Passcode or can't remember it, the iPad must be restored with iTunes as a new iPad or not from the iPad's backup.
Save as much of your data as you can (import your photos to your computer, sync it with iTunes to transfer any purchases, sync your contacts, calendar, etc. with iCloud, etc.) Then connect it to your computer, click on the name of your iPad on the left side, go to the Summary tab to the right, click Restore. When given the option, choose to set it up as a new iPad rather than restoring it from backup. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414.
Connect to iTunes on the computer you usually Sync with and “ Restore “...

If necessary Place the Device into Recovery mode...
Do you realize that you're replying to a thread that is now 6 months old, and where the correct answer has already been provided?
I know this is an old post of yours but I couldn't find anything more recent and you sound like you know what you're talking about. Is there any way to choose a specific backup date (date to before a restrictions code was created) when restoring a newly reset iPod in order to reset or change a restrictions passcode? I've tried resetting the iPod to several times but as I've read in different posts, if you restore using the backup, then the forgotten restriction passcode is still there. I'm trying to export all the photos and videos to my laptop but not sure if I'm doing it right (my son has made several trailer using iMovie). He's concerned about losing his progress too on the apps/games he has. Any way that can be saved? (I'm more of a PC and Android user myself. The iPod is my sons.) Thank you.
The restrictions passcode is part of the backup, which is why it's still there when you restore the backup. You would have to restore a backup made before the restrictions passcode was set in order to avoid this. Otherwise you'll have to save as much of your data as you can, then restore it as a new iPod (without using a backup) and start over. You can't save app data such as game progress, but you can save camera roll photos by importing them to your computer (see Import photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your Mac or Windows PC - Apple Support). If he has photos that are not in the camera roll, have him save them to the camera roll so they can be imported too. Also be sure his apps and other purchased media are in his iTunes library so they can be synced back to his iPod after restoring. To do this, connect the iPod to his computer, open iTunes, then go to File>Devices>Transfer purchases.
If his backups are in iCloud, iCloud only keeps his most recent 3 backups. If he backs up to iCloud daily it's unlikely that the oldest backup would precede the restrictions passcode. When you restore an iCloud backup you are presented a list of available backups and prompted to choose the backup to restore to. This explains how to restore an iCloud backup: iCloud: Restore or set up your iOS device from iCloud. You might also check to see if he has an older one on his computer. To do this, launch iTunes on the computer he normally syncs with and go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices (Edit>Preferences>Devices if he has a PC) and check the Backups list. Note: be sure to save any recent data such as photos before restoring an older backup as it will overwrite the data currently on his iPod with the data in the backup.
