What happened to my iDisk?

Problem/question #1: I converted to iCloud and my iDisk disappeared from my desktop. Where did it go? How can I prevent this from happening again?

Problem/question #2: I was led to believe that I could continue to transfer/modify all of my documents, which are entirely Microsoft Office documents, through iCloud, but the interface says I have to download Pages, Keynote, and Numbers. ???? I don't use those programs and don't really want to pay for them.

Very angry/disappointed. Any advice/help is most welcome.

i got all the way to step 7, and don't quite understand how to finish with the cmd-L.

If you select any file or folder in the Finder, and then press ⌘(command)-L, this will create an alias, a link to your file. The icon of the alias shows a little arrow in the lower right corner. You can drag this alias to your Desktop, or whereever you want it, and use it as a proxy instead of the real file or folder. If you doluble click the alias, the real file or folder will open.

The icons I posted, are not pictures, but icon files. If the link given above does not work, try this:

Sorry, the editor window refuses to link the URL, you have to copy the link directly into the browser. 😟

mine aren't in color like some of the screen caps posted. brand new 15 mbp, running latest lion. i did all my updates.

The grey design is at is supposed to be. But if you want to add color to your mac, you could download

Lion Tweaks, that lets you configure your Mac in an old fashioned retro look.

To change an icon to a custom picture, do the steps 4-7 of the previous post.

Open the picture in Preview or an image browser, select a part of the image, copy that selection to the clipboard with (command)⌘-c.

Then select the item where you want to change the icon in the Finder, do File -> Get Info from the Finder menu, select the icon in the info panel, and paste (command)⌘-v the custom icon into the icon well.

You will have to recreate the alias, to update the alias icon as well.

The icons I posted "http:/dreschler-fischer.de/icons/iCloudIcons.zip"

are not pictures but macintosh icon files. You can select them in the Finder and copy the icon file to the clipboard (commandd)⌘-v, then paste them into the "Get Info" icon well as described above.
