I work in a school where we have a macbook pro and about a dozen ipads. I would like to install apps on the macbook and then push selected apps from the macbook to selected ipads. Is this possible? If so, what is the easiest way to do it. Please reply with detailed instructions as I am very green on mac's.

If they are all connected to the same iTunes accound each iOS 5 device can be configured to automatically download newly purchased apps. i.e. Settings > Store > Apps to "on"
This needs setup individually one-time on each device, but future purchases will be pushed from then on.
However, it's every new app, it's not possible to select specific apps...at least not at this time.
Thanks harv55 I installed "RealChalkboard FREE" on the macbook. I then did what you said to do on the ipad 2 "Settings>Store>Apps to ON", but I don't see "RealChalkboard FREE" on the ipad 2. What am I doing wrong? Also, Is it possible to install the apps on the macbook and then choose what ipad 2's should get which app? Sorry for being really stupid with these things.
Also, how do I get each unit into the same account at the app store?
You'll need to enable it on the iPad, whihc it sounds like you've done. Now download an app from teh app store and it should get pushed... Just to confirm, the iPad will need access to the Intenet and App Store. Is it allowed from the iPad or is it locked in restrictions? If it's restricted it may break this process.
On the iPad, when you're in Settings > Store there is an "Apple ID" at the bottom, click that and make sure it's logged in with the same Apple ID that your Mac is making the purchases from.
ok...thanks so much. I downloaded another app from the app store (on the macbook). How can I tell if it got pushed to the ipad 2? There is no icon on the desktop (or whatever you call that on mac's).
You can't install Mac apps on the iPad, iPod or iPhone. Mac apps require the Mac OS, which doesn't run on any of those devices. They run the iOS instead of Mac OS.
RealChalkboard Free appears to be a Mac app, not an iOS app. If there is also an iOS version of it, you can install that on the iPads. If there isn't, you can't.
Mac apps are sold through the App Store that is accessed through the Apple menu on a Mac running OS X 10.6.6 or better, or through various other vendors or their own developers' sites on the Web. iOS apps are sold through the iTunes App Store.
So basically it is looking like I can't do what I would like to do. The mac salesman said that I could download apps to this macbook and then push those apps out to the ipad 2's from the macbook. Does that make any sense to you mac guru's?
Only if you stick iTunes in there somewhere.

Oh! I read that the app was for the iPad, but downloaded on the Mac assuming it was downloaded via iTunes; not a native Mac app.
That would be a good place for it seeing as how that is how you download the iOS apps and then sync them to the iPad. Yes.

I was in itunes (on the macbook) and in the left pane it had my ipad 2 listed. I accidentally hit "hide" and now I don't know how to get it back. Can you tell me how?

Where you clicked "hide" I believe should now read "show". Just click that and it should appear again.
I guess it was because I disconnected a DEVICE is why it disappeared. Thanks for the replies today.
