Can't double click

Recently I noticed that double clicking doesn't do anything. It worked when I first upgraded to Lion, it just stoped working randomly, I've done all updates possible for the computer as well.

I can't open folders in finder without right clicking on the folder and choosing open, same thing goes for trying to open conversation windows, webmail and pretty much anything else that requires double clicking. I've tried plugging in a USB mouse and it still wont let me double click. Anyone know any solutions I can try to fix the issue, it gets really annoying, specially that my mouse does not have the right click.

Oddly enough this worked really well even though i had to plug a USB mouse in to adjust the setting. Even when my laptop had no mouse plugged in the setting was still in effect. I plugged in a mouse, changed the setting for the double click speed to about halfway instead of all the way up and the trackpad started to double click again as well as the mouse when plugged in. Kudos on a great answer! Solved my problem in seconds.
