why is iCloud so so slow

When I'm on the road (most weeks), I'm using a Dell laptop with Windows 7 Pro. iCloud is horribly slow and sometimes, will not even get past the gray "fabric" screen--just sits there.

So for mail, I switched to Mozilla Thunderbird. Wow, it saved me. It automatically synced with my iCloud folders so that was cool. It did not sync with my address book, but I exported from iCloud and then imported back into Thunderbird.

Of course, this does not solve the problem of using the other apps like iCal. But at least for the E-mail, this is the way to go.

I recently (2 days ago) finally ditched gmail for icloud. Google decided not to allow new devices to use their sync service, which gave me synced contacts and calendars, along with push email.

iCloud syncs calendars. iCloud syncs contacts. iCloud pushes email. The decision makes itself right?

WRONG. Why was google able to do the same things for my (apple) device better than Apple?

This is a serious problem. APPLE: Your competitor just bailed on me and now i'm stuck with you. For the price of these devices (whether it's a MacBook or iMac or even an iPod Touch) the "free" apps/web service/email/whatever ought to be top notch. If google was able to serve my needs on an apple device, then apple should be able to...

Even on the terrible-est of connections i can access gmail like it's on my local network. It's a simple bandwidth issue... spend a little less on R&D and put some money into faster servers and BIG pipelines to serve your customers.

Up until a couple of days ago I was able to access my personal mail at my workplace over the browser. As of yesterday, they are taking forever to load. The only thing I have done differently is do a fimware update. Hmmm.

Apple Mail and messages are dreadfully slow - mail sent to me in the evening is still not showing 12 hours later, that's the next day!! Messages can take two to three days to be transmitted.

Not acceptable.

And not normal, identify what is wrong with your setup and fix it would be the best course of action.

Complaining about it is less likely to fix it.

Calendars and Contacts are not 'syncd', you are subscribed to an online (DAV) service which holds your data. It works in a different manner and it is wise to know how it works before trying to describe what is wrong

3) The underlying technology has nothing to do with my original post, nor does it apply to the title of the thread. I think you may have been looking for the thread called "What technology does iCloud use?" If one doesn't exist, feel free to create one.

If all you've got for people is smarta$$ comments, how about keeping them to yourself?

The fact that there is no sync in iCloud is extremely relevant to people who can't get it to work and then try fix a system that does not work as they think

Do you have any solutions to offer or are you just trolling around

Justin - right on with your comments! As a long time Apple user I think iCloud currently *****! Came on to the forum for the first time to complain about this (along with many others), asking for some positive advice/help, but did not realise that strange people lie in ambush. Bit sad, really. Anyway, hope you resolve you're problems.

iCloud is getting better though isn't it? It use to take me 7 hours to back up but now it's only about an hour.

But it's a shame apple charge for the service. The free 5GB isnt worthwhile when my iPhone is 16GB. I guess they need to make money though.

iCloud is a sad attempt at a cloud service, and it barely works, much like its siblings in iTunes and Match. The problem is Apple is a control freak, and they want to control everything, including what you do on your machines and with what files. They think that by locking down your files into a proprietary system (like they did with iTunes), they'll be able to bleed more money out of you. Thing is, iTunes was the only kid on the block for 5+ years, and now that there are options, we now see what a garbage, bloated, resource-hungry mess iTunes is... it's like Microsoft circa 1999... they are too arrogant and set in their ways to truly make great products.

I mean, is it even a cloud service if you can't upload just about anything you want into it? And why cut me off at a measly 5Gb (hey.... I just bought a 16Gb iPhone from you, but I can't back it up using your 'free' service??)

With Apple, you can only upload approved file types (without work-arounds)... not to mention it is SLOWER than mud, it frequently fails, and I simply don't trust Apple when it comes to software any longer, minus the OS. Nearly all of their peripheral programs are trash... iWork, iTunes, iCloud, Match... I don't trust them with my data at all. Been burned too many times with iTunes...

I strongly recommend you use real cloud services that are fast and trusted, services like Dropbox, Box or Google Drive. Google Drive is by far superior to anything else out there on the market, and it's $30 for 25Gb for the year.

Absolutely, since June 2013, all my iCloud functions, especially Mail are much slower to load than before.
