Multiple devices, family sharing...iCloud setup

I've so far avoided iCloud because it is very confusing to me. I've read loads of threads, and comprehending it all is still eluding me. Let me explain my setup, what I want to do, and how I'm proposing to do it.

My Setup:

5 family members (including myself)

4 iPhones (2 4S, 1 4 and 1 3S) all with iOS5

2 iPod Touches with iOS5

1 MBP running Lion with accounts for each family member.

1 Mini running Lion

3 XP machines, each with accounts for each family member.

The Mini is our "media" computer connected to our TV. It's connected to a network drive which stores all our media, music, books and apps, including everyone's photos via iPhoto.

My Goal:

Everyone's photos taken by iPhones/iPods on 1 Photostream accessible by the Mini for viewing/storage.

Everyone with their own Mail/Contacts/Calendars/etc.

Shared iTunes content, again synced with iTunes on Mini

My Thoughts:

If I am understanding what I've read, I can create an iCloud account which has to be the primary account on all the iPhones/iPods. Then go into Settings on each iOS device and turn off everything I don't want sync'd (Mail, Calendars, Contacts, etc.).

Then for each iPhone/iPod, create an individual iCloud account for each family member, turning on what they want synced on both their iOS device and in their iCloud settings in their accounts on their computers.

For iTunes content sharing, we just keep doing what we've been doing, using the shared iTunes account we already have.

My Questions/Concerns:

It looks like this will necessitate having 6 iCloud accounts, which I guess will work since we have that many devices; but I'm curious how others could handle a setup like this if they only had 1 device per person?

After all this is set up, could I then have an additional calendar added in somehow which the family uses for adding shared events?

So, does this sound right? Am I missing something?

Thanks!

Can I ask a question? I have a new iPhone 4S (which I like very much) and my wife has an iPhone 4. I have updated her phone with the latest software. We have different Itunes accounts as we enjoy different music, photos etc. What I'm trying to achieve is within the "find my phone" application. I have downloaded it on my phone and understand it to the point of being able to find my phone. I want my wife to be able to find my phone as I am often times away for three hours or longer on my bicycle. So I can put the application on her phone but how can she track my location? Or, how does one track multiple devices that have separate user accounts? Does she just login using ID and password? I hope this came out right. Thanks in advance for the help.

Sorry for not understanding this part... but how is the rest of the family able to sync their own personal set of bookmarks if, according to what I quoted, only the primary iCloud account can sync bookmarks - and in my setup, everyone is sharing a primary iCloud account.

Is the quote inaccurate, and you can sync bookmarks on any iCloud account, not just the primary?

Thanks!

Ok, you need to put the main iCloud account on each devise to sync their photo's to the main iPhoto account on your mac mini media center. If the same is used for iTunes then put it on all devises under iTunes. Only turn on what you want sync'd to the main mac mini computer. Then on each of of their devises place another iCloud account and turn on bookmarks. Then on each of their accounts on their computers put the same iCloud that is on their devises, "Bookmarks, contacts, reminders, calendar, etc. Now their accounts will sync the information from their devises to the computer with out messing up anyone elses information. Yes the main iCloud account is the one that will be used under iCloud on their phones. So use the other iCloud account in their mail, calendar section on their iPhones. Then use those same iCloud accounts on the computer accounts they use and turn on bookmarks, calendar, contacts, etc. Hope that helps, let me know.

Good Morning. I'm also sorry to barge onto this but having a "semi same" problem here, with iCloud. I have multiple devices on my iTunes account (4 iPhones, 3 iPads, 1 iPod touch). The problem is my daughter is seeing my txt I'm receiving from my girlfriend, which both of their phones are two of the four, on my account. I'm sure you can imagine what my concern is. Where did I go wrong setting up her (daughter's) phone? How can I fix this and keep it fixed? I thought I set up her iCloud as her own user name, but I could be wrong. And if it is under my iCloud user name, and I change it on the phone, will it stay when I update/sync back to my iTunes? Please help.

Again, sorry to intrude but thanks in advance.

btheath294,

No problem, I had the same problem when I first set my devises up. Go into the settings section on each iOS devise. Open the "Messages" tab under settings, then go to "Receive At" and make sure their phone numbers are displayed. If not then select their phone numbers and delete the Apple ID from that section. Now each iPhone will receive "iMessages" only on their devises no one else's. However, the iPad's and iPod touches have to work off of an Apple ID for iMessage to work on them. Let me know if that helps.

I cannont believe this same problem still exists, over a year later!

My kids have now got old iPhones and iPads as we've upgraded and they're all getting my messages. the only way to stop this is to sign them up to their own ID, which you can't do as they are under 13. So I have to lie and create false accounts? There's a serious non-family friendly issue here.

I hope someone can help me here. I want to set uo my family phones so I can use find my iPhone.

My daughters phone is using a different iCloud account. I set uo a "family" account but how will this effect our iTunes, backups etc.

I basically want to know where she is... But I don't want to share her photos, contacts or emails

What the easiest method and how ??

Thanks ,

frustrated mom

In order to do what you want to do, you need to use different iCloud accounts as the main login for the iPhones and use Apple's 'Find Friends' app to know where your daughter is at all times.

If you want to share iTunes music and app purchases, then you can use a common Apple ID to log into the iTunes and App Stores under 'Settings>iTunes and App Store'.

I have found that Apple is FAR from Family-Friendly. I have the same issue (with numerous Apple devices, 7 of them). They are ALL on my apple account for iCloud so we can share pictures, music, and use Find My iPhone easier, etc. But they are each on their own account for messaging, etc (which they do not need a credit card for).

HOWEVER, because all six of us are on the same account, we have filled up the maximum free storage and are now stuck with having to purchase more iCloud memory. If we each had our own account, we would not need to purchase more storage, but also would not be linked as a family like we want to be.

SO, we have purchased 7 Apple products, we have 4 children, and now have to spend even more for storage space. Thanks a lot Apple! They should allow more free storage for members of a family using the same account? Why not? They would be losing it anyway if we all signed up individually!

Sound advice: Don't buy Apple until your kids are grown and out of the house or unless you don't have kids! I refuse to be locked into Apple iCloud EVERY YEAR--the longer I am on, the harder it will be to walk away later--no thanks! We will switch back to Android--the money we save on the devices will pay for any storage if ever needed.
