Stubborn .wma files to import to itunes?

Hi all,

I know that we can easily convert .wma files into itunes, I have done it before. Problem is, my mac is being stubborn and won't let me "drag and drop" my new music files into itunes. Even when I click on one single music file, it won't play. If I try to play it through Quicktime, it says it doesn't support this kind of "move file" when it isn't even a movie! Please help?

Thanks,

aletracy

iTunes on a Mac does not play nor convert WMA files and never has. You may be confused and thinking of WAV, or you may have previously used iTunes on a Windows system which can convert WMA. If you want to use WMA files in iTunes on your Mac, you will need to use third-party software to convert them. EasyWMA is a utility often recommended for this purpose.

Switch, unless there's more than one conversion utility by that name, is $29.99 US. There is a free version but it doesn't convert WMA unless I'm misreading. The full version has a 14-day trial period, but I can't tell if there are any limitations such as limits on how much of a file it will convert (as is the case with the paid Flip4Mac codecs).

I have a 2011 version of Switch (which I really never use) and remember it mentioning a time limit. I also have a 2007 version and it starts right up without mention of having expired, but since I don't have Flip4Mac (again never use it) installed it says it cannot convert .wma (of which I have very, very few and just play with VLC). I don't know if I installed Flip4Mac if the old Switch can work around the free Flip4Mac limitations and basically give me a free converter, or if it would also require the paid Flip4Mac version.

Audion does free .wma conversion, but dates from 2001 and I don't know if the OP is using a computer than can still run PPC code (ah, the joys of a G4). [Edit - just noticed the OP said they were runnng Windows which I guess answers that, but I'd imagine for Windows there might be many converters.]

Coolwmawmv does free conversion but the trick may be finding a copy.

I had the same problem this morning. The boss needed some audio files converted from 3 zip folders containing 13 WMA audio files. At first I thought that I would try quicktime since i have flip for Mac, But then I decided to do them as a batch in compressor. I upconverted the WMA's to 16 bit AIFF and VIOLA! I was able to make CD copies of the material. So If you have Final Cut Studio then the easy way to convert is with compressor.

I do not have Compressor so I cannot say what it does or does not do, but it would surprise me if it converted true WMA unaided. It is possible you have the Flip4Mac plugin, though I thought it required the payware version in order to do actual conversion vs. just playback.

I don't recall directly but I wonder if I have also seen some MP3s masquerading as WMAs, in which case all you have to do is change the extension and you'll sometimes get them to play back in Quicktime.
