SPSS not working... please help!

Hi!

I'm desperately looking for help... I really need SPSS to work on my mac!

I have a new mac with the following specs:

Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB

Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74)

I can't get SPSS start on it! Neither 19 nor 20 version works. It installs successfully and then just opens the initial blue SPSS box and nothing else happens. I then have to force shut it...I tried the patches and fixes available online... I just can't believe that such an expensive machine would not run a programme like that!

There just must be a solution...

Please help! I have to practice before my exams:/

The crux of my original post was to explain that SSPS is more than likely running 64 bit on a 32 bit architecture.

If that's the case, you WILL get the application hang on the SPSS splash screen when launched.

You will have to install the FIX PACK 1 patch to make the program run on a 32 bit machine.

Maybe to satisfy Mr Jim Kessler, I should have said that the Core 2 Duo is a 64 bit processor however, I did not want to complicate or obfuscate the solution. (if you have an early Core 2 DUO Macbook Pro with a 32 bit EFI, the machine will run in 32 bit mode) Thus, you will have a problem running SPSS unless you install FIX PACK 1. Most people seeking help for this problem are not as technical and do not care about the core 2 duo's capability.

Just follow my link in my original post, create an IBM account and download the fix pack 1 if you have the APP hanging at launch.

I encountered the same problem with spss 20 running on 10.7.5 on a MacBook Pro. Here's what I did:

1. Repaired permissions.

2. Removed old versions of spss

3. Added the patch for spss 20 (http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg24031901)

4. Deleted java plugin and reeinstalled java (http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp)

5. Shut down.

6. Start computer.

When I first opened SPSS it gave me the spinning wheel, and then after a minute or two it started.

I'm pretty sure that step 4 is what did it, but the other ones are worth trying. Spss has a lot of potential, but overall this is a buggy, unstable application, at least on Mac.

I have the same problem on v.22. Running the fix provided by IBM acts the same way (where you see 'ok' and cannot proceed).

It appears that there is a Java update provided by Apple for this particular screen issue. I have not yet been able to test it but will let everyone know if it works.
