SPSS not working... please help!

Hi!

I'm desperately looking for help... I really need SPSS to work on my mac!

I have a new mac with the following specs:

Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB

Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74)

I can't get SPSS start on it! Neither 19 nor 20 version works. It installs successfully and then just opens the initial blue SPSS box and nothing else happens. I then have to force shut it...I tried the patches and fixes available online... I just can't believe that such an expensive machine would not run a programme like that!

There just must be a solution...

Please help! I have to practice before my exams:/

hi, thx for a very quick response!

These are official system requirements from IBM and I understood that according to them, my system should be compatible... is there any way to restore the previous version of the system just to try the installation on it?

Mac Apple Mac 10.6x (Snow Leopard) or 10.7 (Lion) • Intel processor (32- and 64-bit)
• Memory: 1GB RAM or more recommended
• Minimum free drive space: 800MB
• DVD drive
• XGA (1024x768) or higher-resolution monitor

Even though SPSS may have worked with 10.7 is no assurance it still works with 7.2 which is why you need to talk with the SPSS people for help. If you wish to reinstall Snow Leopard:

Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard

1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.

2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.

3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.

4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.

This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.

If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

As I recall, there are two "fix patch" updates to get from IBM/SPSS for SPSS Statistics to update from 19.0.0.0 to 19.0.0.1, and then from 19.0.0.1 to 19.0.0.2. In addition, I think there's one similar patch for the version 20 release.

Sorry, I don't have any links for you. If you can't find them on the web, you should probably speak with your university's help desk.

Hey Jo,

Probably a bit late but I had the same issue with v20 on Lion which I've just resolved. It was a combination of needing to repair permissions and turning off a setting in an anti-virus program. Here's my recommendation:

- Remove previous installations from /Applications (may not be necessary)

- Turn off anti-virus products... more specifically if you are running Sophos anti-virus - open the preferences and turn off the option to scan inside archives and compressed files but leave on access scanner on. (As you can tell from the poorly designed interface, SPSS is not a native Mac App it's a ****** Java app. Java files are effectively compressed archives from Sophos' perspective)

- Open Disk Utility and repair disk permissions (I had an incorrect setting on the java folder)

Hope this helps someone.

Hi everyone,

The fix to running SSPS 20 on your MAC is specific to an Intel 32 Bit or Intel 64 Bit design and Snow Leopard or Lion/Mountain Lion (sorry, havent tried to install on 10.5)

In the case you are running an older machine with a Core 2 duo which is a 32 bit design and Snow Leopard is your OS (10.6.8), be sure you run Apple Software update and grab the JAVA update, if available. Next, run the patch "SSPS Statistics 20 Fix Pack 1"

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg24031901

(scroll down to the download box and select the MAC client)

Please note that this link will take you to the fix pack patch download on IMB's website. After clicking the link, you're instructed to create an account before being allowed to download. I created the account with no problem.

Downlaod and install (similar to the original install). This patch will allow you to run SSPS on a 32 bit MAC.
