difference between mac.com and me.com

Can somebody explain what the difference is between the mac.com and the me.com domains. I can send emails to my @me.com which arrive at the @mac.com account. However, trying to send an email to @mac.com it will be rejected....

In order to have an @mac.com account you have to have had a DotMac subscription running from before the change to MobileMe a couple of years back, and have maintained it since. If your account was created since MobileMe started, or you allowed it to expire and then reactivated it, the @mac.com address will not work, only the @me.com one. When both are valid they should both deliver into the same inbox.

Apparently, there is no way to delete old accounts?!

What sort of accounts? You apparently can't delete an iCloud account once created, though of course you can remove it from your Macs/devices and ignore it.

You can't cancel a MobileMe account once you've migrated, even though parts of it are still running - even if you are still in the paid subscription you apparently can't then cancel it, you you (in theory) can before you migrate (which would lose all your email, calendars, etc) by contacting Support (though people have reported them as no longer responding): of course if you've moved into the free period it's academic as the only point in cancelling it is to get a refund.
