Can't get iCloud mail

I've also linked Apple Support to this thread, so if anyone has additional details they'd be able to provide, please do so. Especially what Incoming Mail Server your iCloud email is on (please refer to my previous post on the last page).

Here are my problems / details:

First off I'm on a pc. That may be my problem.

When trying to use the me.com mail it works fine on the pc. It's when I get the phone involved is when the problem starts.

When checking the mail, trying to send/recieve, or delete a mail i get message errors saying various things. See pics in previous posts of this thread.

Does this problem have any effect on the Photo Stream or calendar ?

New (Apple refurbished model 1) iPad intended as a gift for my elderly mom (iOS 5.0.1). New (created yesterday) iCloud account for her being used on the iPad only. iCloud Mail worked when I set it up and I have sent and received email to the account but it's extremely sporatic and 99% of the time when I manually try to get email I get the "Could not connect to the server" error. I'm using WiFi for this and it's working fine for everything but Mail. I take that back - an iCloud backup of her iPad (~130MB) took 10 minutes earlier today. It's just iCloud - everything else is fine. I have a call from Apple support scheduled for tomorrow. Hoping they get this fixed so I can get this to my mom for Christmas...

The error messages you posted are what happen to me constantly thoughout the day. I haven't even bothered messing with the photostream or calendar, I've been using my gmail account so far until this problem is fixed.

What is really frustrating is my wife has heard her iPhone 4S for a month and she hasn't ever had any problems with her icloud email on her iPhone. So while she gets all her emails, I go through most of the day getting some here, some there, or just a ton of them the next day and it repeats itself.

I am experiencing the issue on four different devices (iPhone 4, iPad 2, MB Air an iMac) with one iCloud account - all services including iTunes Match are working fine except Mail. I am using p99 and it does NOT work for me.

The problem first occured yesterday morning and lasts for 20h up to now.

Strange, that I cannot report the issue to the Apple Support without a fitting Hardware serial even though I am using a paid (upgraded) iCloud account. That should be a cause to be able to contact the support, shouldn't it?

I also encountered this problem with Oulook 2010. Using the iCloud application to configure email synchronisation, I notice that the imap server is p02-imap.mail.me.com. Using this server, I got an error message that say's "Server hosting this mailbox is not available". When changing to imap server p05-imap.mail.me.com, all works perfectly.

So, in my opinion, there is a problem with some imap server, especially p02-imap.mail.me.com shouldn't it?

So should I change the servers to p05-imap.mail.me.com? If so, do I change it on the iphone, my pc, or both? Also would that be incoming or outgoing servers?

At this time, you need to change the incoming server to either p05.imap.mail.me.com or imap.mail.me.com on all your devices.

But, it's just a workaround. Apple must correct it's imap service so that it work with server provided by default.

I talked to Apple tech support this morning.

During the conversation I logged into iCloud online and after an initial error was able to read email.

Some comments from the tech rep:

1) Why are you using iCloud if all you want is an email account? That's not really the best way to do that.

Why? (assuming it's working properly). So I don't need to sync - who cares - does that mean email doesn't work? Isn't it part of Apple's integrated seamless environment? This is for my elderly technophobic mother and thought it would be easiest for her.

2) Yes they're having problems with iCloud. I see that they identified a problem related to your issue yesterday and are working it (no additional info)

The web status says all services are online.

3) iCloud is new and is going through growing pains. Gmail is stable.

Maybe a little truth in advertising is due esp in light of #2

4) "If you want an email account that just works get a gmail account." (direct quote)

Unbelievable and disappointing. I never thought I'd hear something like that.

So they punted. No fix and their help amounted to saying "don't use it".

I'm extremely disappointed Apple. I thought iCloud was the solution to a poorly executed MobileMe. If you ask me iCloud is a mess. I hope the rest of you have better luck.

However, how were you able to resolve this by changing your Incoming Mail Server to p05-imap.mail.me.com? The option to change my Incoming Mail Server in the Mail application on my Mac is "greyed-out" and unable to be changed, not even when setting up a mail account manually (it just defaults to p01).

Granted, I would not like to use this workaround since Apple should fix their system so that iCloud mail works with the servers provided by default, but I am just curious how you managed to change the server.

Steven, I called Apple Support yesterday and was forwarded to a senior engineer. He assured me they will look into the matter and get back to me within a few days. I understand your frustration, I faced similar responses with the first few support staff I spoke to.

the only way I found to do this is the following:

1. Disable email synchronisation for the iCloud account

2. Add a new email email account with your @me.com account, but change the domain so that iOS did not recognize it. Example : abc@mee.com. Click next, enter the incoming server information (imap.mail.me.com, username and password). Enter the outgoing server information (smpt.mail.me.com, username and password)

3. Modify the newly created email account with your correct email address (ex : abc@me.com)

I hope it works for you.

this problem has been going for 3+ months now...for me at least! been dealing with Apple engineers at cupertino and a senior tech. they say they are working on this but realistically, no one has a clue whats going on. this is a true failure on Apple's part. my mobileme worked just fine, as a paying member. icloud migration shot that to h*ll.

blackberry is drab.....but works. the worst was a 3 day outage which they ackowledged. i've picked up a bb and have serious doubts about apple services going forward. no disrespect intended apple faithful....as i was one too. extremely disappointed!

Were you experiencing the same symptoms as us on iPhone? "Cannot Get Mail", and the sole Inbox folder which sometimes displayed mail and at other times didn't? Occasionally the other folders (Sent, Trash, etc) display as well, and sometimes have mail in them and sometimes don't. But almost always results in a "Cannot Get Mail" error message.

Apple really needs to fix this problem. I essentially have an email which does not work at all, and I heavily rely on the services of iCloud. I did not have any problems with MobileMe either.

Thank you for the information. So would you first setup the iCloud account normally on your iPhone, then turn off the Mail switch under iCloud, and then manually setup mail as you described under Mail, Contacts & Calendars?

www.iCloud.com is now experiencing problems as well, so I now have no way of receiving mail whatsoever.
