Smelly keyboard!!!

Hello,

The keyboard on my g3 ibook has taken on a burning smell, also the bottom left part of the laptop becomes very hot when playing CDs, or generally working hard.

Does anybody think these symptoms could be connected?

I run 10.2.1 with 256 mb of ram.

Thanks,
Dave

ibook g3 800mhz, Mac OS X (10.2.x)

The left hand side is where the Logic board and Hard drive are located, so after long periods of use or heavy usage they will heat up quite quickly. I shouldn't worry too much about it as it will never overheat as the iBook will put its self to sleep if it gets too hot.

As to the burning smell, keep an eye on it if if continues might be worth talking to Apple.

This is a known problem with the keyboard on the G3's. The smell is awful. Just goodle for "iBook stinks" or search these forums for a three year old thread...

The replacement part is 922-5186 and it willl run you between 40-125 dollars depending on where you buy it. I am looking at the more opaque G4 keyboard, however I am reluctant to get that one since some people say that the connector cable may not be the correct length.

Dave,

Others have complained about a smelly keyboard, but have been embarrassed to say what the keyboard REALLY smells like. Do the complaints in the following link sound familiar?

My most recent suggestion in that very long, strange thread:
