No video with nad t 747 receiver

Have a nad t 747 with multiple devices running through it to my hdtv. Set the apple tv as a source with the right hdmi unput for audio and video. I hear the femaile voice with the set up menu but see no video. This is my only hdmi source on the receiver. Any suggestions?

AppleTV 2

With your help I know that I cannot connect the appletv the way I want without

As far as both using the hdmi out on the nad or connecting the atv to the plasma and backing an optical cable back to the nad I have physical contraints. The TV is no where near the box (TV is mounted on the wall over the fireplace and all cabling is behind the wall). I acually questoned the theatre guys when they hooked it up on why no hdmi cabling, but everything looked and sounded great. They indicated the down the road solution would be to use the cat5 cable to convert to hdmi and hook up that way(this is in 2006). I actually had to pre-curser to the t 747, the last one fried when the house had power surge), nad gave me the t747 at a low price in good gesture so they technology may have not been up to snuff.

Likely an HDMI compatibility/negotiation or HDCP issue. Does the NAD output over HDMI too?

Might be worth having TV set on set to the HDMI input and NAD set to AppleTV HDMI source then unplug and restart with all 'output path' components alreday set and on. Also worth trying different HDMI leads if you have any spare or swapping them around.

Try connecting direct to TV as a troubleshooting step.

Thanks for the very quick response. First time on here.

To anwer your questions, the NAD outputs via monitor out, obviously part of an theatre system. The TV is mounted high up on the wall, it will be a real project to hook up direct via HDMI. Based on this do you still recommend changing the source on the tv?

I bought an apple HDMI/HDMI cable based upon some reviews I saw on CNET that said there is no difference to high quality cables and low end cables. It looks pretty thin thouggh. Would you advise a higher quality cable, and what brand/type?

In thinking about the cable, my att uverse runs to the NAD via digital coax connections. It has a hdmi output. Do you think it would be a fair test to run the same cable to my att uverse box, change the source settings and see if the same results occurr.

Again thanks for the info.

What kind of connection is 'monitor output' is it composite (yellow RCA) ?

AppleTV needs HDMI connections beacuse the HDCP is not supported by analogue connections and HDMI devices are limited in how they can convert and output digital HDCP material.

I wouldn't waste money on an expensive HDMI cable. Unless the NAD has HDMI equipped HDCP compliant output you won't get a proper video signal from it to the TV and direct connection may be required.

I looked at the manual..the reference is Y, Pb and Pa. on the monitor out. Does that answer your question in that I am not getting a proper signal conversion since the input type does not match the out put type,

I probably can get the TV set up as well with some mirrors, but the sound would only come out of my TV and not distributed through my audio system. Propably not ideal.

The NAD receiver has HDMI out but the wiring through my wall is coax. I saw on line some HDMI conveter boxes that allow the HDMI to convert direct to s-video and rca. The reviews look okay as well, Any insight to these?

I know the audio/video company that said up my system five years ago told me eventually they can run hdmi via the cat 5 they ran in the wall as well. I am sure that service call will cost me $200 plus dollars. I really want to get the apple tv set up but am wondering if you feel the converter would be worth while and work through my NAD?

Monitor out sounds like an analogue component signal YPbPr.

To reiterate the stumbling block is probably HDMI and its copy protection HDCP.

If the NAD is 'saying to AppleTV' can I convert the digital HDMI signal to analogue video, the HDCP 'feature' kicks in and refuses.

Converter boxes that break/strip the HDCP are of dubious legality. They may or may not work.

How about connecting AppleTV2 direct to TV with HDMI and taking an optical cable back to the NAD for audio?

As you say your AV company may be able to sort it out for you but a bespoke solution may cost an arm and a leg.
