How to make image background transparent?

Is there a way to make the background of an image transparent? Eg make one of the colors change to transparent?

In PowerPoint there is a transparency tool where you can click on a part of an image and all that color will become transparent. So if you have an image on a white background for example, all the white turns transparent.

Is there a way to do this in Keynote on the Mac?

It's a tool called Instant Alpha. See Page 78 of the Keynote 09 user guide. Note that you can also do the same thing in Preview for images that you're not using in Keynote.
