.dat extension

In the System/Library/LinguisticData/ folder there are files with with .dat extension. Currently they are set to open with mpeg program stream. This can't be right, can it? What should the file association be? Using Lion 10.7.2 on 2.2 GHz Intel core 2 duo macbook

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

.dat files have no specific application that will open them. There is no standard format for the data within the .dat file. They are just data files for whatever program created/uses them. Many applications will claim a .dat file, but that doesn't make them the correct program.

To open those .dat files, you would need a program that can actually read that specific format.

I don't know what program you'd use to open those .dat files.

Thanks for the reply.

I guess what I really need to know is how to disassociate these particular .dat files with mpeg program stream. I am having trouble with the dictionary not opening in Pages. I suspect this may be the reason. It looks like I set all .dat files to open with mpeg program stream. I need to know how to fix it so all the .dat files open with the programs they are supposed to open with.

.dat is (was) the extension for digital audio tape files (remember Dat recorders) it is also the much loved and well known extension for Winmail.dat files 🙂

These are the files:

file://localhost/System/Library/LinguisticData/en/dic.dat

file://localhost/System/Library/LinguisticData/en/lemmas.dat

file://localhost/System/Library/LinguisticData/en/morphology.dat

file://localhost/System/Library/LinguisticData/en/ner.dat

file://localhost/System/Library/LinguisticData/en/pos.dat

file://localhost/System/Library/LinguisticData/en/trie.dat

file://localhost/System/Library/LinguisticData/en/US/hyphenation.dat

of course, there are many more.dat files, but these are the ones I am concerned with right now. Can someone please look in their hd/system/library/linguisticdata folder and tell me what is listed in the "kind" column?
