Siri is very unreliable. I must regularly turn Siri on and off, or do some other resets to get Siri to work in text message. This is a consistant problen that only goes away for a day or two then returns.

When my problem occurs, I get the mic icon, but the little purple dots just move awhile, then stop without any text being inserted into my message.

Speech to text was one of the main features that inspired me to retire my Droid X and come over to Apple. My Droid X had speech recogniztion that always worked, but it did not recognize words with the high degree of accuracy I needed. Siri does a much better job when she is actually on the job 🙂

though I love my iphone 4s, this Siri issue is very frustrating. I'm surprised to see this has been an issue for so many for so long!

Does anyone know if this issue is isolated to a few thousand users? Are some people completely free from this problem? Or is it everyone?

I ask because I think that info would help to track down a fix if it is only a problem for some and not others.

thanks

(on verizon using unlimitied data plan. not sure if that has anything to do with the problem)

Thanks Kym for your post. I signed in just to like your comment and leave a reply. This "reset" function worked for me. I was having the exact same issue with my voice to text feature. Everything else was working just fine except for that. I use the V2T feature alot and was "disabled" without it. To everyone having small glitches, I would recommend this simple nudge as a first step to resolve your issue.

I am always having trouble with voice to text. When it works it is flawless, when it doesn't...not so much. I can't discern any pattern as to when it works. I'm guessing it is a server or connectivity issue or some combination of both. Resetting the app, whether it's messages or anything else, never works for me. Just now I was trying to write a review on the App Store using dictation and it failed. I reset the app...no change. I rebooted the phone...no change. I have a feeling this is something we will all just have to tolerate. Everyone will be dictating their texts, emails etc. very soon and I'm guessing the problem will get worse before it gets better. However, if anyone comes up with a workable solution I'd be very interested.

My Problem: V2T not working.

My attempted solution:

1) extinguish all active apps,

2) perform a shut down cycle.

(This did not solve the problem but the following additional step DID !)

3) I performed a token SIRI operation...(I asked Siri to set a timer for 5 minutes but i'm thinking any Siri interaction would have worked)

4) I immediately went to my Messaging App to test V2T and functionality had returned after being out for 2 days.

If this works for you, please let others know.

hi everyone , the solution to this problem is very simple , the "messages" software get stucked with the voice to text occasionally , all you have to do is turn it off and on again .

as someone mentioned on page 4 , here is how to :

* bring up the shortcut screen (double click home button twice)

* hold the message icon button till it wiggles

*tap on the red cross to turn it off

* then tap the home screen once .

*go back to the main screen and start "messages" again

and bob's my uncle , happy voice texting ;-)

This is nothing less than ridiculous!! Im so tired of hearing how Siri is in Beta. I mean cmon. The problem is they (Apple) are pushing to many new apps out and they clearly arent testing them enough. Listen, If I wanted a piece of crap $100 phone that doesnt do anything I would go buy a motorola Razr, but a $700 dollar Iphone, Im sorry, but they are just out of line here. Instead of releasing a new hunk of crap, how about fixing the one that millions of people have already PAID FOR and cant use to the extent that they have advertised. Stop with the beta crap, it has been on the market long enough and the boards reflect how many people are having this issue. Stop making new stuff and fix the current stuff that isnt working!

The speak feature uses the music volume which is different than the ringer volume. Siri seams to use the ringer volume however. So if you last had your music volume turned down all the way, speaking text will not be heard. To raise the music volume, double tap the home button, swipe the bottom section with the app icons to the right until you see the volume slider. Increase the volume and try again.

This may not be the root cause of all problems but it does explain why it works some times and not others as it depends on where you left the music volume. Also explains why it works on headphones but not speakers, as the phone remembers two different volume levels for speaker or headphone.

My problem has been different. Unless I lose internet, SIRI and dictation in all apps has always worked. But twice in last few days the mic icon in Notes application has been grayed out and inactive.

Curiously it was ok for Siri (added to a note), Messages and the search screen. Both times I turned off/turned on the phone and mic icon became active in Notes again.

I dictate in Notes heavily. Also a lot of email and all messages.
