Today my sleeper button stopped working. It will put the phone into sleep mode but it does take a great deal of force in order to do so. My phone is not under waranty anymore but i want to get it fixed. So i was trying to figure out about how much it would cost in order to fix it.

$150 if it qualifies for a "hardware replacement." APPLE'S SUPPORT IS THE WORST IN THE INDUSTRY IF YOU'RE NOT BUYING SOMETHING OR UNDER WARRANTY! I JUST went through this at the Apple store about an hour ago. They're purposely making products that fail... otherwise, they would not have made a software workaround for this! Under your accessibility options, you can enable "AssistiveTouch," and get software versions of the buttons that ALWAYS FAIL ON EVERY iPHONE (this is my fourth one that's had a similar problem with at least one of the hardware buttons).
Apple doesn't repair phones. Phones get exchanged. The price for an out-of-warranty exchange is $149.
Given your phone is out of warranty, you might want to Google for an iPhone repair shop in your area. The price to fix it might be less.
They made a "software workaround" for it because they had to do so to make the phone ADA compliant.
"Assistive Touch" are tools for people with vision and hearing impairments. I highly doubt Apple makes devices that fail on purpose.
I have owned four iPhones and never had a home button fail. Therefore your thesis would be incorrect.
Out of warranty exchanges are a flat $149. New iPhone 4 8 GBs are $99 but you'll have to reup your contract with AT&T (if you have them and which you may not want to do.)

Between my wife and I, we've had 6 IPs from 3G-4S. NONE of the buttons have failed. I suspect most of the button failures are from pushing too hard on them over a period of time or maybe just heavy use.
I did look at a used 3G recently and both buttons were very sensitive or perhaps I should say unreliable. Needless to say, I didn't buy that phone.
