Newstand subscription download issues

So according to the apple iPad 2 page and info regarding newstand it says that:

Get new issues without issue.

With Newsstand, every new issue is delivered right to your Home screen. Daily, weekly, or monthly — Newsstand automatically downloads whatever’s new for each of your app subscriptions. And it all happens in the background, so you never have to interrupt what you’re doing.

However, nothing in newstand ever downloads in the background. In order to have a new subscription download I have to keep newstand open, along with the magazine subscription and have to keep scrolling or tapping the screen to keep it open and the screen on. If the screen dims or rests, then when I click on newstand again I have to start all over downloading my subscriptions from scratch. I have gone into my setting and all my subscriptions are turned on to automatically download.... But they still don't automatically download and downloads don't keep going/downloading in background. It drives me crazy having to keep the newstand app open for 10 or more mins just to download a subscription that is already supposed to automatically download. How do I fix this when there is no way to uninstall and then reinstall the app?

Apple, you have failed with the streamlining of this so called App.

I've never had a problem with my magazine subscriptions automatically downloading, or at least 4 other iPads of friends. Do those of you with problems accept push notifications from these magazine apps? I know a special kind of push notification is what kicks off these apps to download in the background, so if have them disabled for these magazines I don't think the automatic download will work.

Also, as far as the magazines suspending when in the background, are you sure they're not continuing but you're seeing the interface from the last time the interface was updated. For example, if I click to manually download a magazine issue and it reports 10 minutes to finish and I leave the app and go to another app for 2 minutes, when I return to the app the interface will still say 10 minutes to finish, but soon after it refreshes to the new time estimate of 8 minutes. The dowload is continuing in the background, but the user interface is not updated when the app is in the background...that's how iOS works to conserve battery but still allow limited background multitasking.

Both of these paragraphs only apply for apps that specifically advertise that they've been updated for automatic downloads and background downloads. I'm not sure if that's a requirement to get in the Newsstand, although it probably should be.

I've been experiencing the download issue as well. With the exception of one time last month, I have never seen an automatic download on my ipad. On my iPhone, NYT updates every day as it is supposed to. I had been contemplating whether this might be an issue with my iPad somehow not receiving the push message due to WiFi problems, but have not been able to confirm this. The only thing that was different on the day that the download succeeded on my iPad was that at that time it was connected to a power source, but this is no official requirement.

As others have stated here, this is a major annoyance for me as well. With magazine downloads sometimes exceeding 600-700 MB, I am really not willing to babysit them.

Reading through forums, one really doesn't find so many complaints about this. So something really seems to be different about our iPads - but what is it?

Looking forward to reading updates from everybody else affected.

There are other core functionality problems too. When an "app" says "Free" and there's nothing free about it, that's a problem! When there's no way to sub-categorize when you have a lot of magazines or to automatically alphabetize so you can actually find them, that's a problem. When you get an app notification on the newsstand that you have 2 something available but there's no indication of what or where, that's a problem.

If I had purchased this app I'd be asking for my money back. If Apple wants to make magazine reading simpler, I don't think they accomplished ANYTHING here!

I have print subscriptions to the NYTimes and New Yorker, which entitles me to free use of their iPad apps in Newstand. NYTimes tells me with the 1 in a red circle when a new issue is available, but I have to click on it to download. Until very recently, the New Yorker gave no clue until I loaded the app from Newstand. Then it would tell me a new magazine was available, but I would have to download it, which takes quite a while, even with a fast connection. I don't know why this would make a difference, but after I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion on my Mac, I found the latest New Yorker on my iPad, supposedly already downloaded and ready to read. When I clicked on View, however, it took at least two minutes to open. I have no idea why there would be a connection between the OS on my Mac and the function of Newstand on the iPad, but I did notice they happened in the same week.

I resent being forced into Newstand when all my other news sources are in a different folder. But more than that, is there a reason there is no search capability in the Newstand apps? I've practically given up using it and fall back on Safari to see the publications' websites because I can find what I want that way, whereas if I miss a day's Times in Newstand, I can't find something I missed.

Yes push and yes auto update don't fix the issue. Anyone doing a google search will see there are 100s of post on this on various forums.

I have over 30 subscriptions and none of them autoupdate even with AutoUpdate turned on. Only a few update the cover and put "new" there but still require sitting forever trying to update.

Unless this is fixed, I will not extend my subscriptions to all but one of these magazines. Too bad for their revenue it's too frustrating. I am however thinking of moving to Kindle for magazines. I fly a lot and its great to read when flying, however if i have to download all these its useless.

This one is pretty tough to wait on a fix.

I have not found this issue to be resolved with iOS 6 either. It's really aggravating to have download manually and keep flicking the screen to keep my iPad 3 from going to sleep (and stopping the download). I also used to get notifications with the red circle -- which often didn't work as it would keep showing the notification even after downloading -- but now there are no notifications in the red circle at all.

Well, same case in my Ipad4, magazine is MacLife.

So, my action, buy the new issue of the magazine everytime, pay, wait for the bill and purchase/installation notifaction ( need to set at Appstore ), and then email apple that I WAS Subscripted AND I SHOULD NOT PAY ONCE MORE!!

But, this email i will send a CC to samsung and google.

Keep telling the world apple's Newsstand is a joke.

Keep telling Maclife apple's Newsstand make your mac life harder.

Samsung , Google, please help....

Apple is hopeless at this issue.

LOL..

The same applies to my I-pad3, but in darkest Africa downloading Photoplus magazine took 2 hours! Sitting with the I-pad on, touching the screen continously to keep the download going.

I also found that once the magazine was downloaded, last months one was deleted! Anyone have any ideas? I subscribe so that I can reference the mags, and I paid for a subscription, so why can I no longer see it?

Frustrating! (Btw, I-tunes don't even work in Africa, so that is another waste of time. Can't download music)

Newsstand has to be one of worst applications Apple has made (besides Maps). I am tired of having to sit by my iPad and tapping it every few seconds to avoid it going to sleep so it downloads a past issue of any magazine. Automatic downloads of new issues not working either despite having done everything in settings to enable it. Will not be renewing any of my magazines subscriptions once they expire.

I have had the same problem with Newsstand issues not downloading automatically. I just found something that I don't believe has been mentioned here (forgive me if it has and i missed it!). In this article http://helpx.adobe.com/digital-publishing-suite/kb/troubleshoot-newsstand-backgr ound-downloading-digital.html

it mentions the familiar things like making sure Notifications are ON for the apps in question, as well as verifying the Automatic Downloads are turned ON. But what was new to me is to make sure that Automatic Downloads is ON FOR APPS (under iTunes & App Stores in iOS6 Settings). I found that I did not have this setting turned on, although everything else was correct. I have not been able to verify this causes automatic downloads to occur, but I have high hopes!
