Newstand subscription download issues

So according to the apple iPad 2 page and info regarding newstand it says that:

Get new issues without issue.

With Newsstand, every new issue is delivered right to your Home screen. Daily, weekly, or monthly — Newsstand automatically downloads whatever’s new for each of your app subscriptions. And it all happens in the background, so you never have to interrupt what you’re doing.

However, nothing in newstand ever downloads in the background. In order to have a new subscription download I have to keep newstand open, along with the magazine subscription and have to keep scrolling or tapping the screen to keep it open and the screen on. If the screen dims or rests, then when I click on newstand again I have to start all over downloading my subscriptions from scratch. I have gone into my setting and all my subscriptions are turned on to automatically download.... But they still don't automatically download and downloads don't keep going/downloading in background. It drives me crazy having to keep the newstand app open for 10 or more mins just to download a subscription that is already supposed to automatically download. How do I fix this when there is no way to uninstall and then reinstall the app?

Apple, you have failed with the streamlining of this so called App.

HELP!!!!!!

Frustrating that I'm having this issue on a new iPad 3. Today I went searching and landed here reading this thread.

Auto set to ON did all the reboot thing...et all above...

Magazines get to about 10% or so, then I get CANNOT CONNECT TO STORE AT THIS TIME> Then it sets me back to 'download' and I start it all over again.

Network is solid. If I try to do ANYTHING else, it stops downloading, resets to 0MB and starts over. I'm actually using this for a work assignment and dreadfully getting close to my deadline. I've been attempting to get ONE ISSUE, from ANY magazine for over 2 days. AAAAH !!!!

Your household telecommunications infrastructure might be a little flakey? This can be the phoneline utilisation itself or your modem/router being overloaded with devices or just starting to fail as components age or it gets hot. With internet cameras enabled, my wife had trouble sending emails. I also had an issue where after a power interruption my internet connection would work but not well and the landline phone was indicating busy.Turned out that the fax machine had been left in a touchy state and needed to be turned off then on again. Most likely, however, is that with too many devices connected to the internet, your provider drops your connection sometimes and when reconnecting, different local IP addresses get allocated and confuse matters. I understand the the Apple Airport Extreme can often improve the stability of internet connection when your home has a fair few idevices. Anyway, sleuth your setup. Could be that intermittent internet connectivity is interrupting the downloads on you.

I recently read an article about Zinio and free library content. I then went to our local library website, which we use often, and am now able to read magazines for free through a combination of the library website and Zinio. I was able to select from many magazines they have licensed with. It is a very seamless transition between sites and user friendly. I previously had a Nook tablet that loaded and displayed your magazines automatically. I agree Newstand is a mess and does not work as I expected. I would expect more from Apple.

Not being able to let Newsstand download by itself is a pain but being asked to subscribe to a magazine for which I already have a subscription is even worse. I subscribe to three magazines but one of them Sight and Sound won't let me read any I have already downloaded nor let me download the latest issues. I've asked them about it and their response is "ask Apple". I came across this blog whilst trying to find out how to ask Apple and it seems this is a long running concern that appears to be ignored by Apple. What are we supposed to do about this when everyone either passes the buck or ignores us?

Has anyone managed to get any kind of response about this or are we all whistling in the dark?

I'm going to get a Windows Surface Pro. I can use Adobe products, download the magazines I like, use MSFT Office products. I love Apple products, but it's not worth the money for the hassle. And, as an afterthought, do I have to have a Newstand at all? Why can't I just download to my desktop. I have been struggling thru this since the first version of iPad, I would've thought that upgrading would fix it. Go back to my first sentence 🙂.

For all of those hoping/wishing for a "fix" from Apple, there won't be one and this is why:

The problem is not Newsstand, but rather individual magazines own implementation of Newsstand.

Newssstand is just the structure or mechanism that Apple provides to make it easy to subscribe to magazines through iTunes, but each magazine publisher writes their own front end, which actually displays the magazine for you, and the part that fetches the magazine, based on their particular subscription model.

Some do a great job, like Bloomberg for its BusinessWeek, which downloads without fail in the background to my iPad each week and sends me a little notification when there's a new issue. Works perfectly.

Some do a terrible job, like Wired (published by Condé Nast) which does not download in the background, only works when I'm connected through through a VPN in the US (I live outside the US), takes forever to download and often aborts mid-way. Utter crap.

If there's someone you should take up the issue with, it should be Condé Nast and other incompetent publishers, not Apple.

I suspect zerohalo is correct, that the problem lies with the developers who build the software to display their products in Newsstand. The chronic failure-to-download issue I've had is with a different Condé Nast magazine, The New Yorker. The latest Wall Street Journal is always there when I want it, and the New York Times updates itself quickly, although it first displays the article I was reading the last time I loaded the online version of the newspaper.
