Seagate Momentus XT 750Gb on a 13" MBP

Has anyone tried this hard drive on a 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 13" MBP?

It looks like a great upgrade, but I've been reading mixed review from mac users, so I still haven't made my mind, and order it.

I'm looking for bigger capacity, and this looks perfect! My 250Gb is almost full, and causing the "spinning beach ball" to appear a lot more (well, at least that's what I think it's happening). Also I want to install Apple's Logic software, and from what I've read it doesn't wrok well if installed on an external drive, so an external HD is not really a solution...

I just order one of these only in the 500GB model. Should be here on Wednesday and I hope I don't have the problem you are having. Although I am installing it in a late 2011 15" MBP.

The 500 and 750 variants of this drive are very different technologies, although the setup for either is the same, if you ordered a 500 ensure that you update the firmware to SD28, having done that it will be reliable if not particularly fast. The 750 has read/write ssd (500 is read only) and some better developed algorithms, I have several 500's (mainly on MacMini's) I have only 1 750 but it is very much faster than the 500's. (I have the 750 in a 13"MBP, and I have 2 similar 13"MBP fitted with 500's)

What's "CCC" to clone the drive? Don't recognize the program.

Carbon Copy Cloner. Also SuperDuper. I use to use CCC but have switched, the other day, to SuperDuper.

I have a 1TB external drive. Can I use CCC to clone to this drive. Make it the startup drive. Then try Disk Utilities to format the new Seagate internal drive once installed. And tehn clone a second time. Or is that too big a stretch.

Yes, but it would be simpler to clone to the Seagate, CCC or SuperDuper, doesn't matter which.

Mail order an external enclosure instead, it will be useful for the drive you remove, very similar prices, get the right tools, the job will be simpler that way.

One final question. I need the SD 28 firmware which only works on Windows. Do I install this through Parallels before I do the clone? If the new drive is not there yet, will the software install? Or do I just install SD28 after the new drive is in?

You need SD28 only for the 500, and there is a Mac .dmg you can burn to a cd for Windows-free use, check the Seagate site.
