I currently have Snow Leopard on my internal hard drive, and Lion in one partition on an external drive. Works fine, just requires a reboot to switch between the two.
Even if you select Optional Installs and then select the the External HD as the Location?
The Optional installs are just odds and ends not the actual Snow Leopard. So it looks like it cannot be done if you're just trying to use the SL Upgrade DVD rather than the full Snow Leopard version.
Thanks anyway for your time and trouble, it's appriciated. 🙂
In my case, my internal hard drive has Snow Leopard, which I left alone. First thing I did was to clone my Snow leopard drive to the partition on the external drive, then I installed Lion on it. I can easily switch between the two, either via system preferences startup disk or when rebooting.
