I have this iPhone 4 locked to 3 UK and want this unlocked to any network across the globe. I called 3 and they said that the lock can be released only by Apple and they does it for a charge of 15GBP. Is there any other go? Any assistance will be appreciated.

If 3 has passed your IMEI to Apple to unlock then you need to restore your phone in iTunes, preferably with a sim card other then 3, and you should see a screen at the end of the restore that says "Congratulations Your iPhone has been unlocked".
ONLY the carreir nto which it is locked can initate the unlock. No one else at all can do this at all. Apple does not do this. ONLY the carrier can do this.
You carrier will have to unlock the iphone. If they charge for this service, then you will have to pay them for the service.

May I know how they are gonna unlock the phone? Does it need to be send over to them or do they just need the IMEI? Please clarify this coz I'm on the other side of the globe and I won't be able to send the phone over to them if they need the device.

I contacted 3 and first they told me that it is not them who is unlocking iPhone but Apple.
I rang them again and somehow got them convinced. They agreed me that they would unlock it for free. I gave them(obviously) the IMEI number. After a while they told me that my phone is unlocked and I need to connect it to the iTunes before starting to use it.
Please note that this call was made by somebody who lives in the UK on my behalf and I don't live in the UK at present. So I wasn't able to make more clarifications.
My question is: Would I be able to unlock it remotely as they said without having any codes typed into my phone? Can I ask them to have an e-mail sent with the confirmation that they have unlocked my phone and also the instructions to be followed?
Normally the carrier (UK carriers ) needs the iPhone to be ACTIVE in the UK and on their network .
Since it seems likely you cannot meet that criteria since you are not in the UK with the iPhone
I would suggest the chances of it being unlocked are ZERO but please prove me wrong if you think it possible

Guess what..? I've proved you wrong. My phone is UNLOCKED now.
Even I never thought of getting it unlocked remotely.
Here's what they have done.
After so much of persuation over the phone, 3 UK agreed that they will unlock the phone for me. They got the IMEI number from me and told me that the phone will be unlocked within 24 hours and for that I need to connect the phone to the iTunes. What they do is, they will request Apple to remove my phone from the locked list and my phone will be updated when it is connected to the iTunes. Happy Life, isn't it?

Have already sent them an email but it was nearly a year ago so I am not holding my breath. I really want to get away from 3 as their customer service is diabolical. Is there any other reliable way on the internet sites that is a permanent unlock official or not?
There is no official unlock other than through the cell carrier. If 3 has refused and continues to do so, then again, there is no way for you to get your iPhone officially and permanently unlocked. Repeat, no way.

I have an iphone as you have guessed- brought from UK and I need to get it unlocked so is it possible for me to unlock it for here remotely considering that I didn't purchase the phone on my own and it was sent to me from UK. Bhai, I guess you're in India.
The least possiblity will be is to contact the original purchaser of the phone. The network will have the record of the original purchaser and they will unlock the phone only if the original purchaser contacts them.
All they will need is the IMEI number of the phone.
I got this phone from my sister who lives in UK. I made her contact the customer service and they unlocked the phone for me.

No, he cannot get your iPhone unlocked. His sister was able to get his iPhone unlocked because the she was the one who originally purchased the iPhone, so she contacted the carrier and arranged unlocking. His sister can do nothing to help you get your iPhone unlocked.
As has been said a number of times in this thread, you MUST contact the carrier to whom your iPhone is locked. ONLY they can authorize unlocking.

No other way. Only the carrier to which an iPhone is locked
can unlock it. Being as you make reference to Modem Firmware,
I will assume that the iPhone has previously been hacked or
jailbroken or attempts to do so have failed due to modem
firmware version.
This being the case, a legitimate unlock may not
be possible and may turn your iPhone into a brick due to
the modifications made by the jailbreak. If I am mis-reading
what you said, my apologies.
