Logic Pro - 19GB of 'optional' content available via in-app purchase.

This seems weird. IN the App Store see the System Requirments sections and it says..."19GB of 'optional' content available via in-app purchase." Logic Pro to buy normally, was gigabites of stuff....thisd App Store purcxhase is only 413Mb.

Can anybody tell me

a. What this 'optional' content via in-app purchase is?

b. How much this 'optional' content via in-app purchase is and

c. Didn' t Logic Pro 9 used to ship with masses of content...I mean Gigabits of the stuff. This App Store Download in only 413MB...doesnt that mean that yes its is less money to buy...but for it would seem less stuff.

Have Apple been very cleaver here...I mean clever?

Thanks for your answer. Do I understand this correctly, that I have to interrupt the download to be able to use the installers for the other Macs?

Hi

Yes...'fraid so... the installer packages are deleted once the installer has run... to grab the installers you have to "interupt' the process after download, but before the installers run (Asks for Admin Password).

But what if it's too late for that, if I already installed everything on my first Mac? Would it alternatively be possible to copy the installed content files to my other Macs? If yes, what and how?

Simply copy the folders to the equivalent locations on your other Macs

This is a big list:

<Startup Disk>:Library:Application Support:Logic

<Startup Disk>:Library:Application Support:garageband:Instrument Library

<Startup Disk>:Library:Audio:Apple Loops

<Startup Disk>:Library:Audio:Impulse Responses

That should (?) be it

How is this content optional if it must be downloaded?! So actually the App is 413MB + 2GB = 2.413GB... SO WHY DON'T APPLE SAY THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE?!

Life out in California must be sweet for those guys. Sorry I'm having a rant about this!

I have to agree - I'm working from home over VPN today and figured I had enough time to download Logic Pro on the Mac before some stuff would arrive on the PC in need of my urgent attention. Having just launched Logic Pro it says it has embarked on a 2GB download of essential items - why on earth don't they just stipulate the download is 2.4GB to begin with!

Perhaps it's to do with updates being more lightweight if these components are already installed but still seems daft.

I could interrupt the download I guess but hate doing things like that in case it hoses anything - it probably won't but you never know.

Does Logic Pro start without these components or just Quite if you cancel the download?

I have a client who suffered the same fate, she was upgrading from Logic Express and figured the download was only the size listed in the App store. She has a slow DSL connection and figured it wouldn't be that bad a download. As for getting the 20GB of additional data... she will have to depend on someone else to download it, use a work-around to save it and then install it.

Apple should offer the disks on special order.

Welcome to the "new Apple' where the customer comes last.

I think Apple have taken the 'like it or lump it' approach for several years now - 'do it our way or don't bother' seems to be the attitude with many things. .Mac to MobileMe, MobileMe to iCloud with loss of numerous features, rapid hardware refresh cycles for portable devices with usable ones from a few years ago turned into legacy devices due to lack of current iOS support or deliberate exclusion of certain features. Rosetta out of the window with Lion. Insisting on certain hardware requirements before allowing apps to be bought, even though they will work when transferred to a 'below spec' machine (eg my Mac Pro would not download FCP X due to incompatible GPU, but app worked when copied over from my newer Mac Mini).

I have to say though that while initially sceptical about the Mac App store it has given us several high-end apps at far more reasonable prices than the old boxed offerings, though certain things have fallen by the wayside in the process.

Apple is a hardware company, that's where they make their money. The fast turnover and limited support for older operating systems is designed to sell hardware. Logic 8 actually runs better under Lion (far more efficient) than Logic 9, it's just that Logic 8 will not install under Lion. Same with the reduced prices on high spec software... again, designed to sell hardware.

This doesn't really answer anyone's questions, but it might help some people. Here is a list of the optional install packages. I think it's all (19GB) of them. (Correct me if I'm wrong!) Maybe you can get a friend to download them elsewhere where the internet is faster or has more bandwidth. Hope this helps!

I think there are a few missing... I'll go and have another look. I probably already had some installed from GarageBand.

If you were wondering, I found these in the Logic Pro plist file:

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.logic.pro.plist

And they're under the 'MAPrefs_ActiveMentorDownloads' key. Not sure if they'll be there for everyone, but for me they were 🙂

I'd be good if there was a list somewhere with all the packages.

CCT - Thanks for the list of locations.

I'm trying to verify that the installed content has all been correctly downloaded. Would it be possible for you to confirm the directories/sizes that should be created under the Application Support & Audio folders?

I had some previously installed content & in an attempt to reduce the download time checked the option to not download the existing content.

What I have currently is:

<Startup Disk>:Library:Application Support:Logic Total Size=4.36GB

<Startup Disk>:Library:Application Support:Logic:Project Templates 1.1MB

<Startup Disk>:Library:Audio:Impulse Responses:Apple:05 Warped 591.1MB

The total size of the above is 23.79GB.

Is there anything else that should be installed?

Thanks in advance for the assistance.
