10.6.6 to 10.6.8 - advantages? disadvantages?

I am still running 10.6.6 on my new iMac (introduced 2011 May)

I haven't done the update to 10.6.8 yet.

Everything works fine as is, but I suspect security updates which are available for 10.6.8 would be an excellent idea.

Is there any reason not to - or reason to - do the update?

I've not done other updates listed by SU because I don't know if the SU assumes I'll update to 10.6.8 first and the other suggestions are dependent on that first or if it wouldn't suggest anything not compatible with 10.6.6 (as I know, say, the Firefox update is wont to do by suggesting updates to Ff that my Tiger MBP can't do)

Somewhere, someone, mentioned something about the App storebeing an issue with 10.6.8 - any info on this? I am not an App Store user.

Thanks,

Tried 10.6.6 on the MacBook when first released (I always use that as the guinea pig).

Wasn't at all happy with what it was doing and reverted the system to 10.6.5

Hi ndw,

So are you still at 10.6.5 on all your Macs?

What do you do about security updates? Are they offered for 6.5? Just curious - I can't go there since my iMac came preinstalled with 10.6.6.

Both MacBooks are on 10.6.5, My iMac is on 10.6.4 (the .5 update is in my Docs folder, but I haven't found a convenient time to run it yet). My partner's iMac is on 10.5.8. After running SL for some time I could see no advantage whatever in updating it and going through the hassle of updating scanner drivers. It does all she requires, including running Logic Express and an older version of Quark (and the Quark fails under SL).

All in all, change for change's sake has never appealed to me.

Security is mostly between the ears - being aware of what scams are out there and never trusting anything that pops up unbidden.

I also run Little Snitch on all 4 Macs (with a block list a mile long on mine), and NoScript in Firefox. I allow only the minimum of scripts to run, and if any that seem essential for a site to run look to be of dodgy origin to me, I don't use the site.

Security updates for versions earlier than 10.6.8 seem to have dried up. There are still a few for 10.5.8, but now 10.7 is out I expect they'll be curtailed sooner rather than later.

It isn't a disaster. 😎

ndw,

Thanks as always for being a voice of reason and calm.

I haven't gotten Little Snitch yet - but plan to - after doing whatever updates I decide to do. I've read several many complaints that going from the demo and to the real thing causes issues - have to pursue that further before doing the trial demo before purchasing.

I hate being paranoid about my computers, I just don't feel as if I know enough and I want to keep those bad guys out of my home. I have WOT and NoScript with Javascript disabled, as well a disabled but current Flash and Quicktime. Never been to Facebook or MySpace, hardly ever look at YouTube - I have too much other important stuff to do. I tried AdBlock Plus but it made it impossible for me to quit Firefox (I could only get out by force quitting), so I had to uninstall it though it seemed like a good addon that didn't work for me. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3576410

I have yet to install any software other than Ff on the new iMac been too busy...
