iPod Touch 2nd Generation no iOS5

I have an iPod Touch 2nd Gen.

ITunes does not display an option to update to iOS5.

I really want the new features, such as wireless sync, but there is absolutely no option. iTunes says that the latest version is a 4. something, but it shouldn't be.

Additional Details:

2 Year old iPod Touch 2nd Generation which iTunes says is fully up to date

OS on my PC: Windows 7 Home Premium

Post any answers here please!

iOS 4.2.1 is the latest update for the 2nd Generation iPod. You can't install iOS5 on it.

If all you want to do is stream your iTunes library to your Gen 2 iPod Touch there are several apps that allow you to this even with the original (non updated) software. The one I find works the best is offered by mspot music. You upload your library to their cloud, (lots of free storage with a additional pay for more ) download the app on to your Touch and you're ready to go. I've also used Audio Galaxy, but they don't use the cloud, your computer need so be on, iTunes open, and it streams from your own hard drive.

Of course technology changes and improves. And I am one that moves forward and keeps up with the latest. However, I still believe it is a rip off that an older version of something they sell stops working with apps that it has always worked with. I have no problem with the fact that Apple doesn't want to update the operating system but all the apps that have always worked with the itouch should continue to work until the itouch itself breaks. Now everytime I plug in my grandsons itouch because he wants something on it, more apps stop working.

well this just proves you do not keep up with the latest as you are making a compleatly void argument. The product is working EXACTLY as it's supposed to! Apple has absolutley no control over the applications that are created and developed by third parties for use on all kinds of smart devices! The only applications made by apple, come pre-downloaded on the device and do not require updates. If a company that deveolped a game or application decided to update the software encryption to work on a more updated system, or more likely a brand new game that wasn't created until recently and therfor would not have thought given to old systems (which would also apply for the android market as most of the applications are the SAME) you cannot blame the company that designed the physical machine that you are trying to use the application on.

Sorry ink I totally disagree. Fortunately iPod 2G is the only Apple device I have and will ever have. Here's a terrible example; I had Kindle on my iTouch, which now doesn't work at all, what has changed with Ebooks that means my hardware is too old? Nothing. I now cannot access my library on the iTouch which I liked to use for this purpose. Can you tell me why my iTouch shouldn't just continue to run on the old version of Kindle? I can't think of any reason. So if I want to use an iTouch for Kindle to read the books I already bought I have to buy a new one? seriously?! Oh BTW just to 'void' your argument, Apples own iBooks no longer works either, but i guess that's not their fault? The device should work as it did when you bought it until it breaks, this is Apple just trying to force you to buy a new one, period.

The e-books have not changed, kindle updated their application. Hardware for physical devices and software from dowloaded content are compleatly different things. So Yes, it is their fault that they want thier books to work on the newest software so that the largest amount of people possible can use it. And your monkey island comment is compleatly redundant as the age of a game is no matter since the application market it's self is only a few years old, therfore all application versions of games are fairly new and constantly updated. Pacman can be played on an iphone because it has been re-encrypted to do so not on a huge arcade machine. Sudoku dates back to ancient times, but clearly is no longer on paper and the app version is updated regularly to keep up with the market... I do not have the time to continue trying to explain technology to you; so enjoy complaining about how kids these days don't consider anyone but themselves in solitude.... as to the old ipod being your only device? I don't think the multi-billion dollar company will miss your $199 sale for a new ipod.

Inksparrows...you're absolutely correct. My problem with the Gen 2 Touch is that I've had Apple techs tell me not to upgrade beyond the original iOS as the processor can't handle the load and that everything will slow to a crawl. I've taken their advice and lost a lot of apps, but as you say, you can't blame the developers for wanting to reach the largest audience. My Gen 2 is running 3.1.3. Do I dare go any higher?
