iPod Touch 2nd Generation no iOS5

I have an iPod Touch 2nd Gen.

ITunes does not display an option to update to iOS5.

I really want the new features, such as wireless sync, but there is absolutely no option. iTunes says that the latest version is a 4. something, but it shouldn't be.

Additional Details:

2 Year old iPod Touch 2nd Generation which iTunes says is fully up to date

OS on my PC: Windows 7 Home Premium

Post any answers here please!

iOS 4.2.1 is the latest update for the 2nd Generation iPod. You can't install iOS5 on it.

I also have the iPod Touch 2nd Gen and (model A1288) and upgraded it today, and as Ingo2711 correctly says, iOS 4.2.1 is latest update, and won't offer iOS 5. I've read elsewhere that the 2nd gen Touch wouldn't get iOS 5 support.

If it helps at all, we also have an iPad 1st Gen, and a couple of iPhone 4's (not 4s's). Initially I had the wireless sync turned on for the iPad, but then discovered it was actually much more of a hassle and slower getting my music to update (stays in cloud until you force it to download), than just syncing to iTunes which is quick and easy.

I've subsequently gone back to using iTunes to sync since it's pretty easy and it's really fast compared to syncing over the air. If the sync happened automatically over the air, then i'd be a bigger fan of that, but in the end, it just shows which songs are needed from the cloud, and you still have to click on the song to download it.

One thing we really like about iOS5 though is photostream, which automatically pushes photos taken on any of the devices to all the other devices, and does so automatically over the air -> they just show up.

For our 2nd Gen iPod Touch, to get a 'similar' photo stream behavior, I set iTunes to the sync photos to the Touch from my iTunes PC's photo stream folder. Thus, whenever I sync music to the Touch, then the latest photostream pictures get sync'd as well.

Wow, this is pretty lame, I cant use half the apps I want to because they require ios 4.3 or later, this right here has cemented my decision to go to Microsoft for my mobile devices, period.

I cant even get the new 'My Xbox Live' app which I have been waiting for them to release for a very long time. I also really wanted to play "Infinity Blade" which can only be played on later technology, that's fine I understand that. I was going to get an iPad 2 so that I could play it, that's just not going to happen now. I know that they have not tapped out what the 2nd gen tech can do, like posted before they are getting greedy and want us to by the new iPad/iTouch/iPhone or whatever.

I am sure that Infinity Blade will eventually make it to Windows Phone(Epic has said that they have future plans to release on the Android and we all know how much Epic loves Microsoft and their love child Gears of War) and when it does then I will play it. I must thank apple for one thing, I am going back to Microsoft, I think i will be happier there.

Fellas, its not a RIP OFF (Ripe-off...that's funny!) its called technological progress. Stop and think about how things were 20 years ago... Back then I was getting ready to retire from the US Navy. Desert Storm was over, Slick Willy was in the White House, there was no such thing as a Smart Phone, no touch screens, no Twitter. And look at what we have now.

In July of 1969 (43 years ago) I was 18. I watched Niel Armstrong set foot on the moon fer cryin' our loud, and the computer in the Lunar Lander had a whopping 8 Kilobytes (8192) of ram. And if you watch the videos, listen to Buzz Aldrin calling out 1502 alarms... That alarm means data from the guideance computer was filling up scratch pad memory. When Armstron finally set the craft down on manual control, they had less than 30 seconds of fuel left.

About 2 weeks ago a company called SpaceX sent the first commercial space craft to the ISS, and the whole thing was automatic, totally autonamous computer controlled. Now that's progress.

Its really sad that you guys think the world should stop moving forward so you can stay in the past. Time to put your big boy pants on and get with the program...

I don't think its sad at all. When someone pays for a product one should expect said product to be at its best until it breaks. People will still buy the other products because there are apple fanboys all over the place, but for the average person it isn't fair for them to have to buy a new product just so that they can run a different operating system. I have a ton of friends who are about to be screwed because their old macbook pros will not be able to run Lion.

That is an awful analagy. If you want the newest things, you can't expect them to work on old technology. The actual inner hardware is out dated for things in a new system and is therefor not supported. If everyone used all technology until it broke, we would all still be using briefcase car phones and glass screened TVs. The 2nd Gen ipod is more than 5 years old which is a really good lifespan for that type of technology. And your non-lion compatable friends will not be "screwed". If they want the newest luxuries of the newest operating system that was designed for a compleatly different machine than their own, then it is time to upgrade to a system that supports it. I'm sure people with kodak cameras aren't complaining that the newest digital memory cards aren't compatible with their outdated film cameras. Quit whining.

I realize hardware is limited, but Apple seems to be notorious for holding back technology for stupid reasons (ex. the casing would be too thick). Maybe I'm out of line, but whenever Apple outdates hardware I suspect they just want you to buy the new version.

@pyok I'm pretty sure you can use a prepaid credit card that you buy at gasstations and convenience stores.

Well I must say that yeah it is a rip off I have seen so many iPods (2nd Gen) that have been updated to the to the new iOS 5 and they work just fine. So the iPod 2nd Gen can't handle the new iOS statemen is a load of bull. Another point is if the iPad can wirelessly sync with iTunes over WiFi then what is the big deal about getting the iPod to do the same thing?? What's the big difference??
