'No Volume Available' but headphones work

Weird problem just cropped up today on my iPhone 4 (no longer under warranty). If I try to play the Music app, Pandora, YouTube and many other sound apps I can't hear the audio over the speaker and on some apps a message appears saying 'No Volume Available' on the screen. It has this message in Pandora, in YouTube and the music app just don't have the volume slider.

If I plug in headphones all work normally.

If I use the Phone app, or Talkatone I can hear the audio via the earpiece and I can switch it to the speaker. So I know the speaker system works as some apps detect the speaker and can route audio through there. Skype on the other hand works via speakerphone but not via the earpiece. Key-clicks and lock sounds don't work via the speaker.

I've reset the iPhone a few times, 2x via holding down the power key and shutting it down then restarting with the Apple logo and once forcing a shutdown via power+home buttons.

I've restored the iPhone, I'm running iOS 5.0.1, bluetooth is off, mute switch on the side is on (I've switched it both on and off, didn't do anything). I've tried plugging/unplugging in headphones to see if debris or something would be knocked loose but that didn't work. Plugging/unplugging dock connector several times didn't work either.

I'm wondering if an app I tired did something weird electrically? I had a headphone jack plugged-in and ran the TASCAM recording app to try and record something. Had a tough time figuring it out and it was while I was trying it that the problem seemed to occur as I couldn't hear anything recorded via the app.

I've since removed the app and done all of the above to no avail. I'm going to try another restore. And don't suggest I just go to an Apple Store, the nearest one is a few hundred miles away on another island.

Problem returned this morning after being docked overnight so Baron, you could be right. Have now submitted the problem to Vodafone as a hardware problem, and they are now saying its possibly that it might be a software problem! However, they are allowing me to send it back under warrantee. And Vodafone admitted that Apple have indicated to them that the "permanently on home button problem" is also a software problem.....

Thanks for your help.

I signed up just so i could reply to this message. I have had the same problem with my iphone 4 for months but after reading this post i was able to locate the problem and fix it. I had the exact same problems that people mention here; no volume bars after about two seconds after being unlocked and the speakers/headphone jack are still working. so basiclly my Iphone is fine but the speakers dont produce sound when i need them to. it was driving me nuts because the volume would work for like a half second after being unlocked. i was able to solve the problem when i took my dental pick and cleaned out the charging port. At first i scraped a bunch of crust off of the two pins that depress when the charger when its plugged in and thought it was fixed but i was wrong. it took alot of scraping and scratching but eventaully after layers of crust came off i was able to free the little cut out port in the center/bottom of the charging port, about the size of a match head. i honistly thought my work was in vein cause i had already free'd the two tiny prongs so if anyone is having this problem, just keep cleaning the port with a needle and hopefully you wont need to go to the apple store.

I now have the cleanest dock connector in the universe, it still doesn't work. I believe it's a software problem, because volume works fine when you

activate Siri. Apple, you've got a problem. 😠

I was able to click the weird Airplay icon once, and it had one choice: Dock Connector. My dock connector is clean. So clean you could eat off it 😝

I was havin the same issue with my phone, headphones would produce sound but as soon as i unplugged them i could no longer control the volume or hear sound. This usually caused by a dirty connection in either the headphone slot or the dock connector. Simple solution...

1) get a q-tip and dip it in nail polish remover and turn off phone

2) insert in dock connector(may take a little force to get it in there but it makes better contact for a good cleaning)

3) repeatedly move back and forth then get a new dry qtip to dry it out.

4) blow in the dock connector to ensure it is dry

5) power on your phone and you should be up and working
