'No Volume Available' but headphones work

Weird problem just cropped up today on my iPhone 4 (no longer under warranty). If I try to play the Music app, Pandora, YouTube and many other sound apps I can't hear the audio over the speaker and on some apps a message appears saying 'No Volume Available' on the screen. It has this message in Pandora, in YouTube and the music app just don't have the volume slider.

If I plug in headphones all work normally.

If I use the Phone app, or Talkatone I can hear the audio via the earpiece and I can switch it to the speaker. So I know the speaker system works as some apps detect the speaker and can route audio through there. Skype on the other hand works via speakerphone but not via the earpiece. Key-clicks and lock sounds don't work via the speaker.

I've reset the iPhone a few times, 2x via holding down the power key and shutting it down then restarting with the Apple logo and once forcing a shutdown via power+home buttons.

I've restored the iPhone, I'm running iOS 5.0.1, bluetooth is off, mute switch on the side is on (I've switched it both on and off, didn't do anything). I've tried plugging/unplugging in headphones to see if debris or something would be knocked loose but that didn't work. Plugging/unplugging dock connector several times didn't work either.

I'm wondering if an app I tired did something weird electrically? I had a headphone jack plugged-in and ran the TASCAM recording app to try and record something. Had a tough time figuring it out and it was while I was trying it that the problem seemed to occur as I couldn't hear anything recorded via the app.

I've since removed the app and done all of the above to no avail. I'm going to try another restore. And don't suggest I just go to an Apple Store, the nearest one is a few hundred miles away on another island.

Hi All. I fell in a lake fishing yesterday and some moisture got into my phone through the OtterBox. I was having all the same problems as described in other posts and I tried all the recommended solutions.

In the end (for me anyway) the solution was very simple. Basically the phone still had moisture in it so I had to figure out a way to get it out. ****PLEASE READ THE WARNING BELOW BEFORE PROCEEDING**** So I used a can of compressed air (can be bought at any computer store for a few bucks) and sprayed every opening including all the speakers, the Sim card ejection hole, the earphone jack, EVERYTHING! Also, keep the air nozzle a few inches away from the opening.

****WARNING - Don't do this right away after the phone gets wet if it was submerged in water. First dry the phone as fast as possible with a cloth or something. Then place the phone in a container with uncooked rice at least overnight (the rice will help absorb some of the excessive moister in the phone so that when you use the compressed air you aren't just blowing moister further into the phone possibly destroying the main circuitry and making your phone a paper weight ;)

After using the compresses air I opened the app that wasn't working without the headphones and it worked perfect. This is very similar to using a hairdryer and drying it out however my method is much less dangerous as the heat of hairdryers could be too hot could damage other internal parts of the phone. I would not recommend the hair dryer method unless it has a switch that will blow only cool air, also hair dryers don't have as much pressure as compressed air and is likely not to work unless you do it for a very long time. With the compressed air it took a minute to spray down all the openings.

I'm so glad I found this. I spent about 4 hours last night searching the internet for a solution to this. I just happened to notice that no sounds were coming from my phone. I usually keep my phone on mute during the day, so at first I didn't notice it. When I was at home, I noticed that i didn't hear the alerts for my email and texts when i un-muted it. I went to the buttons on the left to turn up the volume and nothing happened. then I went to play some of my games with music and still no sound. I read some of the boards that said to unplug and replug the headphones and i saw that sound only came in with them plugged in or if someone was calling me. I restored to original settings, backed everything up and made an appointment at the genius bar.

I can't for the life of me figure out what it is. I've tried cleaning out the openings with a paper clip but i'm afraid of damaging the insides. I'll try the forced air and see if that helps.

Thanks.

After about 2 months if my phone having this issue the problem seemed to have resolved itself. What I thought was the problem was an app that I downloaded (one if those TV station viewing apps). I deleted it and soon after that it started working. I don't know if that was the cause of the problem or not but I don't want to reinstall it to find out. FYI it was the ABC channel app that I had that I deleted.

Well I've put up with no sound for a year now and finally when coming to sell my phone I've given it one more go to try and get to the bottom of it.

Finally I've fixed it, and what's surprising to me is I've not seen anyone detail how to check the specific pin that affects this issue, (pin 11)

I've tried all methods commonly listed, I've cleaned the pins with all sorts but nothing solved it.

To do this you might need a magnifying glass, you will need a torch and a needle.

As you look at the bottom of your phone screen up, count the pins from left to right, you need to check pin 11. Pin 11 if grounded sends audio permanently to the dock (whether connected or not)

Now what I did was scraped the top of this pin several times, each time I touched it with the needle the sound came back momentarily. However to solve the issue I had to be brave and get under the pin with the needle. After several attempts I bent the pin back ever so slightly and gave under the pin a good scrape (the plastic side). I returned the pin to its normal position and that was that. Sound worked ever since. There must have been either a short to ground somewhere and this method cleared whatever was causing my issue.

You do carry the risk here of snapping this pin but to be honest I was at my end here and was just brave.

I can now hopefully sell this on as a good as new phone now so I've saved myself a fortune.

Please try this if you have the skills and confidence let me know if yours works.

For the more adventurous of you - I recently aquired a second hand iPhone 4. The first thing I did was wipe the phone to factory defaults and install the latest update. I noticed that the phone would ring fine, but txts and whatsapp messages would only vibrate. Songs would not play, but the volume bar would come on if I plugged something into the headphone socket.

I read about cleaning the ports, plugging things into the headphones and removing it repeatedly. None of this worked. So I went to the good old tried and tested turn it off and turn it on again - which worked - only I REALLY turned it off. I would only recommend this to people with phones out of warranty.

iPhone 4s

1. Remove the 2 screws by the connector port

2. Slide the back cover up and off

3. Remove the 2 screws on the battery connector (Its in the bottom left corner, and is a silver plate)

4. GENTLY remove the connector from the motherboard - I used a plastic spatula.

5. Hold the phone's power button down for a few seconds with this disconnected to remove any residual charge left in the motherboard.

6. Replace the connector, screw it back in, pop the back on and screw in the two screws by the connector port.

It seemed that the phone still thought something was plugged into the headphone port - so draining the power completely forces it to forget everything.

I turned it back on and got all my sounds working fine again.

I hope this helps 🙂

I was pretty dubious about this. Seemed a software problem to me. However I persevered and cleaned out what I thought was a pristine dock area (only used for charging) in my partners iPhone 4s with a cotton bud and some nail polish remover, and when I turned the phone back on - it worked. She now thinks I'm a legend ! Full kudos to the guys who worked this out. Thanks !!!

I dropped my iPhone5 down the toilet while doing my make up, don't ask me how, but somehow it fell from my being in my hands to down the toilet. It was in the water for less than two seconds before I pulled it out, luckily, it had a case on which stopped the water from getting into everywhere (camera, screen etc). I quickly towel dried the phone and took the case off. Everything was working normally, the power was working, the screen, the home button, all of these things were working. However, it got into the speakers meaning music wouldn't play on a speaker.

I ran downstairs and put the iPhone into a bowl full of rice and placed it in direct line of the sun as it's a hot day. The sound worked normally through the earphones but not on speaker. When I went onto settings then sound and put the volume of ringtone on loud, my ringtone could be heard but only very quietly, however, on my music app and youtube, no sound would play.I tried putting the phone in rice, it didn't really work that good, then I tried putting the hair dryer on it and that didn't work either.

After about twenty minutes, I looked up solutions on my iPad. One site said to get a Q-tip( cotton wool bud) and to pull a bit of the cotton out then out it into the headphone jack. It then said to twist it around then pull it out. I didn't think it would work, but, luckily, the sound is working perfectly fine and my phone is exactly how it was before, nothing different. The charger works fine and so does the speaker. I honestly thought my phone was broke, so glad it's now fixed and back to normal, took less than forty five minutes as well.
