iTunes 10.5.2 locking up immediately after execution

Is anyone else experiencing problems with the new 10.5.2 version that was just recently released? Ever since I loaded it iTunes locks up immediately with the waiting "hourglass" and stays this way continually requiring a hard exit to get out. I have tried several different things to no avail:

  • Reboot, both warm and cold
  • Uninstall and reinstall
  • Also tried uninstalling and reinstalling to an older version (10.2) but Apple sets it up where this is not possible due to an .itl file.

I have taken a couple separate data dumps in hopes of sending them to Apple but they have pretty much no way of contacting them directly with an attachment that I have found.

System specs:

  • O/S Windows Vista
  • AMD Athlon Processor 2650e, 1600 Mhz
  • 3 Gigs of Memory and plenty of hard drive space

Here is some of the information I pulled when the program begins to lock/loop:

  • Appears to reach roughly 77,000 K Working Sets that spike quickly and then stop around that number.... possibly locking during startup?
  • Once the application locks the iTunes process is using no CPU to extremely low amounts of CPU: <.01 percent.
  • Attached both detailed and short dumps

Any help with this problem, a workaround to get back to a previous version of iTunes and/or a way to get a dump file to Apple Support would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Clayton

A little background on APSDaemon.exe

APSDaemon.exe (otherwise known as Apple Push) is the service that wirelessly syncs your device. It may safely be stopped from running at startup, but you may not be able to wirelessly sync your device. Hopefully Apple is working on a fix and does a better job in the future to ensure system stability.

Sanchez83, I would recommend the following steps:

Reboot and first kill APSDaemon.exe and see if that works. If not kill every single Apple process and see if it works. That will let you know if a started executable associated to Apple is causing the issue. This should allow iTunes to work... Not saying it's the most formable or efficient way but until Apple puts in a fix it is the best option we have.

If for some reason that doesn't work try restarting your computer in safe mode and start iTunes to see how it functions. There is always a possibility that another process not related to iTunes could be causing the issue.

Good luck!

I am having the same problem as others here, I just updated to 10.5.2 on my windows 7 and am now having trouble with itunes. Opening itunes and accessing the library seems ok, but itunes automatically closes with an error when I try to access the itunes store. I have not tried syncing to any device.

As suggested, I have ended the APSDaemon.exe in task manager, but that does nothing to solve the problem - itunes still forces a close when I try to access itunes store. I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes twice, to no avail.

Any other suggestions for fixes on this discussion thread would be appreciated - at least until Apple sorts this out...

Thanks!

This worked for me. Thanks clayclay. Open iTunes (which will lock up if you are having the same problem as I). Go into Task Manager. Select iTunes from programs that are running and open the tab Processes. Click on APSDaemon.exeand then click on the End Process tab below. After completing this action, go back to iTunes and it should "un-freeze".

Solution to iTunes 10.5.2 hanging while trying to update iTunes Library

Well everyone, I think I found the solution. I am running OS 10.6.8 with iTunes 10.5.2.

I too found that the iTunes would hang at about 70% "Updating iTunes Library".

What I ended up doing is removing the library.itl, library.xml, and music.xml files from the music folder and placing them on the desktop.

I restarted iTunes of which it would say unable to open because the library files were missing. Quit iTunes. Dragged the 3 files back into the iTunes music folder and restarted iTunes.

iTunes started up normally without attempting a library update.

Music and everything seems to be in all good working order. WiFi sync of phone worked just fine.

All appears normal.

Hopefully others can repeat this process with the same results.

Hi, I have Windows 64 bit and only got a fix when I located the iTunes.exe file in the C:\Program Files (x86)/iTunes folder and changed the User permissions in Properties/Security tab for the .exe file to "full control" (and then re-booted). The original properties did not have write permission, so I suspect that was the problem.

Hope this helps.

Sweet Llamas from Bahamas, it's solved for me!

Adding Full Control rights? It was just that simple? Thanks a lot for your hint, charlesinaustralia!

Obviously, iTunes couldn't close the APSDaemon task properly after being closed or when being opened another time - I observed that the APSDaemon task now will be closed a couple of seconds after I quit iTunes...

Thanks again and have a good Xmas time!
