MagSafe adapter recall

Has anyone gotten a free MagSafe charger due to fraying? I am wondering whether I am going to have to turn in my frayed (but working) charger and thus be without a charger until the new one arrives. I find it strange that there is no information about this on the Apple page about the replacement program... they just say bring it to an Apple service provider for evaluation.

Apple refused to replace my frayed and sparking magsafe adapter as well. Apparently, despite their claims otherwise, they only replace chargers that came with the a computer and not ones that were bought as a standalone. This is contrary to what Apple claims on the "replacement program" website, but it is the policy that is being enforced at the University Villiage Apple Store in Seattle.

I suspect they will change their tone as soon as someone is injured or a faulty magsafe starts a fire.

I have both a black plastic MacBook and a unibody MacBook Pro. Oddly, the T-type MagSafe of the older black Macbook is still working well but the unibody's L-type had frayed and died out. I set an appointment at the Apple Store in Grand Central, was made to wait 30+ minutes, and when the Genius came around to attend to me, she was very apologetic about the delay. Like most Geniuses, she was chill. She explained that only the T-type could be replaced, but I showed her the frayed L-type MagSafe. I guess she saw that my request was reasonable and she gave me a new L-type charger.

Maybe the Geniuses make decisions on a case-by-case basis. Maybe the Genius who met with me was more open than others?

I have 2 computers that had frayed cables, a macbook and a modbook, which I purchased at the same time. They replaced my macbook cable without hassle but refused to replace my modbook cable that had the same issue, claiming aftermarket modding voided the warranty. However, the class action settlement doesn't say anything about a warranty, it says if I am in the US (I am) bought the computer as the original owner (I did) and there is stress relief damage (there is) I am a member of the class.

The idea that apple supplied faulty cables, and then doesn't have to replace them because of the modbook conversion voiding the warranty is both ludicris and not in line with the language in the class action settlement.

I am going to take one more try at escalating through apples customer service, then I'll be contacting the lawyers involved in the class action lawsuit. I think apple has an obligation to replace the defective cable. The aftermarket modding has no effect at all on the cable, it's not like the cable or connection is modded at all.

Where is your cord fraying? At the brick end or at the magsafe end?

Wrapping the thin cord tighly around the "hooks" on the brick is what caused mine to fail at the brick end. I finally got Apple to replace my cords and the fellow at the Apple Store showed me how to wrap the cord while relieving tension on the brick end of the cord. Since then, I've had no problems with my chargers! See the photos below for examples.

I too experienced an issue with my magsafe charger. My charger would not work sometimes and I would have to clean the adapter charging port, and the charger itself until finally it died. So I took the adapter and my MacBook air to my local apple store (Miami-Aventura, Florida) and was told that they could not help me because my mba was out of warranty. I casually mentioned that I received an email about the recall and she informed me that it was not for L shape but the T shape, and said she would see if she could replace it under that policy and it worked!

My advice :

Give your Mac a nice cleaning – it shows you take care of it, taking it in a sleeve is also helpful (received this advice from this post)

Be very nice to your genius (It causes then to soften up) ie how is your day going, wow its hectic in here how are you holding up.

If you are out of warranty mention the recall on the charger email, and tell them you called apple directly and they told you to bring in.

If the above doesn’t work ask them is there anything they can do such as a discount because you don’t have that much money.

I should also mention that some stores and genius are more lenient than others. Keep plugging at it and you will find the right one

Hope this helps

I had to login just to reply, I was at the same store!!

we usually have good luck at the Tysons Corner one, but they are told to deny any claims of power adapters after all.

and yes we didn't get a replacement, which was very frustrating as we drove an hour to get there from West Virginia.

although we never quite manage to get the same store twice, I think it was a different one in Virginia?

and no I didn't try to repair it, yet.... see my next comment.
