iPhone 4 'Other' Space is 6.8GB!?!?!

I have an iPhone 4 on iOS5.0.1 and a MacBook Air that is on Lion v10.7.2 and iTunes v10.5.2.

This morning I was syncing a complete lot of new music to my iPhone via USB, when someone phoned and as I answered I unplugged the cable. When I plugged the iPhone back in, the 'Other' section was up to 6.8GB. My phone shows as having no music. The music that I wanted on the phone is around 7.9GB, so I'm pretty sure that the 6.8GB is where the sync had got up to before it was interrupted.

I've tried to resync, etc, but I can't get any music on because of the large 'Other' file. I'm in an area with really slow internet, so restoring would take forever because downloading the iOS to my computer would take about three days.

Any suggestions!?

Thanks,

iPhone 4, iOS 5.0.1

Other data issue Solved!!!

My 'Other' was up to over 5 gb! Searched and searched the forums for a solution besides restore to new(not a solution!!). It sounds like Aaron's trick might work for a certain type of data.. It did not work for me.

After reading BawlZINmotion's reply, it dawned on me that we have been sending a lot of videos and pics of our newborn via text. I deleted all of my text messages. Other went from 5gb to .49gb. It makes sense if you think about it. That data is somewhere if it is in your text messages and is not necessarily accounted for in photos or videos. It is surprising that more people have not found this solution as there is a ton of discussion about this on the forums.

Good Luck!!

There is a problem, after I did that little trick, I got over 4GB back which is nice BUT...some of my music didnt play, I had to re-sync the phone, and then the 4GB of "Other" came back.

So...I guess the music app needs that "Other" space, d'oh! So close to a solution, unless anyone else has worked it out? I'm back to square 1 and you might find the same if you try to play your music.

Could you specicfy if you sent those by actual text message or by Apples iMessage? I found that you have to reload older iMessages from the server, as they are only saved locally for a few days past. It would be ridiculous of the devices to still store the videos/images locally, even if the messages itself were not saved.

I am nearing 6 GB and was able to rule out pretty much everything besides the messages. As I only send and receive media via iMessage I am reluctant to delete everything, even the pretty much spaceless text messages.

Thank GAWD! I've been searching for months trying to figure this out. Before I did Aaron's trick I had 1.93GB of other space which was maxing put my 16GB iPhone 4. Even after empting trash, deleting all texts, voicemails, browsing history, phone call history, etc I couldn't get any extra space.

I did this and it immediately went down to 1.18GB of other space. Hmm...what if I did it again? Sure enough I did the exact thing a second time and am now finally down to 1.671 MB of other space.

Thanks Aaron!!
