Msiexec.exe System Error

Hello,

I recently tried to update Itunes for Windows 7. I downloaded the latest version of Itunes and when I ran the Itunes64.exe file a got an error message saying

"msiexec.exe - System Error -- The program can't start because MPR.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."

I went to Itunes support and followed the directions on how to reinstall the program correctly. Then went to reinstall the program and got the same error message. I now have no Itunes on my computer at all and am very upset. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Curious ... MPR.dll is a Windows Operating System file. (It's the Multiple Provider Router DLL.)

Let's try running an sfc /scannow as per the following document:

How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

Does the scannow repair any damage? If so, can you get an iTunes install to go through properly now?

See if you can get to C: properties this way:

Can you go to START, right mouse click COMPUTER and click MANAGE

In the Computer Management Window, select "DISK MANAGEMENT", then on the top right Pane, right mouse click OS (C): and click Properties. In the Properties box, select TOOLS tab, and click CHECK NOW. Make sure "SCAN AND ATTEMPT RECOVERY OF BAD SECTORS" is checked.

Restart Windows.

Before you go ahead reinstall or repair windows.

Can you try this one more time? I suspected when you used Malwarebyte to scan for the first time, if the virus was already in your system, they might have the ability to change some configuration in your malwarebyte program making your scan invald. Try uninstall Malwarebyte in regular Windows mode.

Then go in Safe mode with networking, download Free version of Malwarebyte. Install, update and perform a full scan again.

Failing which you may have to go to the route of repairing or reinstalling Windows. Make sure you back up all your important data files.

I managed to get some information from Microsoft Help for your reference. This is so much that I can do so far, Good Luck!!

sfc/scannow: Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation:

OPTION A: See the "How to obtain help..." section of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2360131

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY (and/or 1-866-234-6020 and/or 1-800-936-5700) in the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB2360131).

Or you can...

https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=6527

Customers who experience issues installing Microsoft security updates also can visit the CSS home page for assistance: https://consumersecuritysupport.microsoft.com/

OPTION B: There is a very good chance that you are seeing the effects of a hijackware infection!

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

Microsoft PCSafety provides home users (only) with no-charge support in dealing with malware infections such as viruses, spyware (including unwanted software), and adware.
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?&prid=7552&st=1

Also available via the Consumer Security Support home page: https://consumersecuritysupport.microsoft.com/

Otherwise...

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually: http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2a. WinXP => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!) in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

2b. Vista or Win7 (but not Vista 64-bit or Win7 64-bit) => Run this scan instead: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm

3. Now begin your own, new thread in one (only) of the following recommended forums for assistance by an expert in such matters. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!!

Back-up any personal data (none of which should be considered 100% trustworthy at this point) then format the HDD & do a clean install of VISTA. Please note that a Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade) will NOT fix this!

Alright...I uninstalled Malwarebytes in regular mode. Then I went into safe mode and re-dowloaded Malwarebytes and updated it and ran a full scan again and it caught something. I will paste below what the log says. I assume I need to get rid of this thing. Is there a correct way to do it or should I just have Malwarebytes delete it? Thanks!
