Digital Audio Out on Macbook ?

Audio out on macbook is spec'd as analog/digital, audio out on imac is spec'd as analog/optical digital. I think a toslink mini-plug will work with the imac, what cable is needed to get digital audio output on the macbook ? Is the quality good enough to drive a home sound system ?
