That would allow you to use it on another GSM carrier.

As has already been clearly stated, Verizon is NOT a GSM carrier. They are a CDMA carrier. A GSM phone simply will NOT work on a CDMA network. It's not physically possible.

For you to use with other GSM carriers, NOT CDMA carriers like Sprint or Verizon.

That is so you can unlock a GSM AT&T iPhone and use it on a different GSM cell system such as T-Mobile (no 3G data with them though) Orange in the UK, T-Mobile in Germany, Bell in Canada, or one of the other more than 300 GSM providers. It does not change the hardware/radio transmitter to a CDMA device.

Again, sell the iPhone you wer given and get a Verizon model.
