To re-install iPhoto

1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)

2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.

2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type

/var/db/receipts/

2c: on 10.7 they're at

/private/var/db/receipts

A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.

3. Re-install.

If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.

If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.

If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

Hi,

A couple of days ago I began to have the following problem:

Open iPhoto either via opening application manually or automatically (via connecting a device/inserting SD card). iPhoto goes to open but then a blank screen comes up and the dreaded colour wheel. When I click on the iPhoto icon it comes up 'Application Not Responding' and my only option is to force quit.

I haven't backed up for a few months (terrible, I know) but I have just attached the drive with my last back up and it opens fine.

When I went to work out which version of iPhoto I was using, it says that it was last modified in 2009 in the applications menu and it is version 8.1.2.

I'm using OS version 10.6.8

Let me know if you need any further info. Would you suggest I do what you have already suggested to the other users on this thread?

Thanks!

Same problem with crashing and Apple seems to want to ignore it. At least say you have a problem. All the fixes are weak, at best. Come on Apple, everyone else is waiting for you to give us a real fix. My assumption is that it is directly related to the iCloud auto-download of new photos. Can't we find a way to interrupt the "Streaming" and toss some preferences or empty cache? Most likely, we do not have corrupt files UNLESS something like streaming photos are causing it. Pulling recent photos out of iPhoto library and rebuilding then??? Hello? Please help...

I have exactly the same problem Promobw. Everything seemed to be running OK, I had just clicked upload all photos from an SD card when iPhoto went blank. Haven't been able to re-open despite two re-installs. I'm running OS X 10.6.8 with iPhoto 8.1. I've tried the solution offerred of emptying the receipts files and re-installing but to no avail. Could do with a solution too, anyone got it pleeease!

Thank you.

If re-installing doesn't help then the problem is likely the Library and not the app.

Option 1

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.

If that fails:

Option 2

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

Regards

I too have this issue. I recently did a software update and since then, I have been having problems with mail, word and iPhoto. iPhoto will not open at all.

I have version 9.2.1 and OSX Lion 10.7.3. Below is what seems to be the most pertinent part of the error message.

User uploaded file

It worked properly up until about a week or so ago. I went to open it and this message popped up, and it hasn't opened since. Any help would be wonderful! Thank you!

I have a 5 month old Macbook Pro 15". OS 10.6.8 came with iPhoto installed. I use it extensively and have thousands of photos and videos on it. iPhoto just stopped working. I was moving a scanned image from the desktop into it and it just wouldn't work and won't open now. Below is what it says in the message block:
