Facebook and Adobe Flash

Yes, the last supported PPC Mac Flash version was 10.1.102.64, but there was a hack available to report that version as a later version that supposedly works... until some feature of the later version is actually needed anyway.

If you're using Safari, you might try TenFourFox...

I also couldn't watch videos on Facebook in Tiger or Leopard on a G4 MDD. I could post .mov videos on FB, but could only watch using my iPad2.

I fould the hack, installed it & it works with Firefox, TenFourFox & Safari with Tiger. Haven't tried it yet with Leopard. Here's the info.

Download this http://www.steelbin.com/FPforFBPPC.zip to your desktop, unzip it, and replace the current Flash Player plug-in which is in your main/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, (not the user Library). Save the old one just in case this one doesn't work.

I used ther Adobe Flash uninstaller instead, since I already had it.

I installed the hacked Flash plug-in on my G4 PowerBook running Tiger. Now I can also open videos on Facebook. When I run the Adobe what Flash version, I get

What a wonderful find! Thanks! I will immediately spread the word! Why should millions of PowerPC machines become obsolete just because Adobe makes Flash software holier than Swiss Cheese.

Adobe has half heartedly admitted defeat on Flash & will be going to HTML5 as soon as ice forms around Lake Hades. 😉

Adobe actually admitted defeat with mobile Flash. Desktop Flash is still clinging on!

I am amazed at how much trouble Flash has been to Adobe since they bought out Macromedia back in the 1990's.

Macromedia never had issues with keeping up developement and updates to Flash to keep improving its performance.

I wonder how many Macromedia Flash developers/software engineers Adobe either fired, kept on or the employees just quit? Since Adobe took all of this over, Flash has been a very poor performer across all platforms and worse on the Mac platform for years. Even worse since Apple transitioned to OS X. They really turned this plug-in into a cluster!

I miss Macromedia & other smaller companies. 😟

When I place the cursor over it, the info. line at the bottom of my page looks good, but clicking it I get a rapid progress bar (lower rt., lasts 1 second) and nothing happens, nodda, zip, zilch, nothing !!

Can anyone the the .jpg ?? ... is link broken ?? ... Or is it just me & my luck ??

There has been so much disscussion, or flap about this hack / work around, that I really wanted to see what TMM had posted in this .jpg.

If I had ONLY come here first! I could have phrased my question word for word like John G's, and thanks to Texas Mac Man, Facebook and other videos are working again. It DOES work with Leopard. I upgraded from 10.4 to 10.5 by buying the disk, then downloaded the upgrade to 10.5.8, then tried to figure out Adobe's website regarding archived Flash software. I downloaded several versions from there, none worked. So I finally came here and voila!

I too think it is preposterous to try and put these excellent machines out to pasture before their time. Sure, I'd love a shiny new Intel Mac, but can't justify the cost right now or the landfill contribution.

One last note from me; I am not very computer savy. Very average at best. But I followed the link that Texas Mac man gave to steelbin, and just followed the directions that the steelbin person gave. It was easy, and worked like a charm!! No problems, no fuss. Thanks Texas Mac Man for posting!!!😀 (This is a self portrait of me sitting at my computer now very happy!)

Thank you, Texas Mac Man! I've been working on this for days. Very frustrated with the Adobe Flash download site. Never any useful information anywhere about why I couldn't update Flash. The Steelbin link was a lifesaver! And, like kootenaysbestsinger, I'm not very computer savvy.

No need to restart my Mac in my experience.

However, there does seem to be a false positive: copying the file to the folder and going to Adobe's detection page in browser shows updated 11.1.102.55, however, you'll notice that right-clicking on Flash objects still shows "About Adobe Flash Player 10..." in the last menu option at the bottom. Nevertheless, Flash objects in Facebook are functioning which confirms this hack is legitimate. And not only for safari, I use Firefox regularly.
