Hi OBW,

It is all good. A bit of heated discussion is good for the soul and as I personally do not know Terence, I will assume he is a stand up guy. Nothing personal on my part. Just a bit of snarky humor.

You make good points about both products...I am invested in the Apple ecosystem but not so much with iWork apps. I use them but not as part of my work flow. Actually I am a bit disappointed that Apple has linked Aperture so closely to iPhoto. I feel it cheapens the pro nature of Aperture. I understand the idea behind it but I do not like it.

Fingers crossed for A4, but I will rely more an more on my NIK apps to bridge the gap...

Now we have moved on into transference. You would be a Psych majors delight. I did no such thing but pointed out that you are a proud member of the FUD universe. I find it hard to believe that I had to post three dictionary definitions for you to finally understand the difference between an opinion, fact and rumor. At least in the end I was able to educate you. For this I am quite proud. For a moment there I felt you were a lost cause but you came through with flying colors. Well done. Well done... Now run along. Grown ups are talking here. 🙂

Bless you but you're hilarious.

Yes you have. You've pointed it out again and again. Quite incorrectly, of course, because you can't follow simple logic, but then others can read these posts (heaven help them) and judge for themselves.

I'll let you have the last word, as I suspect you'll need it.

Don/Terence,

Please take this offline. Some of us signed up to receive email alerts on this thread because we were interested in the topic, and to enhance our learning of Aperture (learning what it lacks, by means of a whishlist can be helpful).

Don has an opinion that there will be no Aperture 4.

Don pointed to lack of rumors on sites about Aperture as one reason why he believes there will be no Aperture 4.

Terence pointed to some rumors of Aperture 4 that included Amazon. Not that he beleives in the rumors per se, but rather if rumors are the basis of an opinion, the opinion should reflect those rumors.

You two are now fighting indirectly about the rumors and whether they're sufficient to sway your opinions one way or another.

I think it's fair to Don to say that there aren't rumors of the type we typically see regarding leaked information about new products from Apple... no screenshots, no real details, etc...

I think it's fair to Terence to say that there often are no rumors or leaked information from credible sources before product launches, especially with software. However, what rumors that do exist are in favor of Aperture 4 being released.

Nonetheless, you both have your opinions and neither one of them is really relevant to this thread, as compared to a "Will Aperture 4 be released?" thread.

I use both extensively, often side by side.

I've been blogging about the differences, pros and cons between Aperture and Lightrrom a whole bunch here.

I'll try to summarize what I've been talking about in my blogs though.

The similarities between the two that do not exist in iPhoto are;

  • They both protect the color space
  • They both preserve the RAW file
  • allow area specific editing
  • interface with PS seamlessly
  • allow external HDD support
  • have advanced slideshow functionality
  • have large user groups making presets
  • have cut and paste adjustments
  • apply camera specific corrections

Differences between Aperture and Lightroom are minor.

  • Aperture has better Apple app workflow
  • Aperturet has photostream support
  • Aperture works inside iWeb, iPhoto, iMovie etc...
  • Aperture has more complete retina support (as of right now)
  • Lightroom has minor video editing capability (some photo edits can apply to video, easing workflow)
  • Lightroom works better with PS if you are doing HDR or timelapse
  • Lightroom's cummintity support is better. You'll get more free presets etc...
  • Lightroom has customizable brushes
  • Lightrooms brushes are additive and you can control flow
  • Lightroom can apply lens specific corrections

I've created mine in PS, save for web, then use them as a preset for Aperture... Pretty sad that after all of this time Aperture still does not have this feature implimented... Considering the bloatware fusion that Aperture to iPhoto is becoming I wonder why Apple hasn't decided to add this as welll... How many more megs could a watermark module add to an already obese, and somewhat clunky app? I wish Apple would annouce a new Aperture version or simply kill it off...

Dream on... We're talking about Apple here. They know better than their customers and in this case they view pro shooters in the same vein as a regular comsumer, thus the incredible bloatware that Aperture has become... Been playhing with LR for about a month now and I have to admit I do not miss Photostream, the ability to read iPhoto libaries and some of the other craptastic "features" of Aperture. I still have Aperture on my Mac but currently only to open files perviously edited in Aperture... I've stopped recommending my friends to use Aperture and to go directly to LR... I really hope that Apple restores my faith in what I consider an old and left behind app...

This is the problem. The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior, and Apple has spent the past three years dumbing down Aperture with consumer- and iOS-focused features while failing to address key shortcomings that the novice upgrading from iPhoto won't notice.

Hard to believe but at one time Aperture was miles ahead of Lightroom. Waaay ahead. Now Aperture 4, should one even come to be, will at best get close to Lightroom 4. I seriously doubt that Apple can even catch up to LR, it is that far ahead.

Apple let a wonderful program waste away. All in favor of dumbed down, childish iOS.

Well, while I too would like to see a meaningful update to Aperture, I don't believe Lr is a panacea of perfection either ... once you get beyond the Library and Develop modules, the offerings for Slideshows, Books and Web are abysmal at best. Then consider Lr only supports tethering for fewer than 30 cameras ... while Apple supports well over twice as many ... with support added much earlier than Lr has ever had.

Frankly, the UI, whether it be OS X , iOS or any other form, isn't much of a concern for me as long as when I am finished with my work it is up to a standard my clients expect and deserve ... the pipeline to get there is inconsequential. Only results really matter. Even if some would consider it childish ...

What I find troubling is a company that has nearly $140B in the bank doesn't seem to be willing to put forth the resources to bring Aperture up to speed with the needs of the user base. There needs to be a major offering, yesterday, rather than tomorrow, before too many abandon Aperture for other options.

Apr 6, 2013 10:25 AM in response to ButchM

@ButchM BAM! You nailed it. I might even go so far as to say that the Library module isn't that good. I do a lot of HDR work and if I process it from a LR collection, the finished image isn't imported back into the Collection. I get the fun of finding it in the folder.

Yeah...an update to Aperture is well past due. But....since Apple has advertised recently for software engineers for iLife/iWork AND Aperture, that tells me Apple hasn't abandoned it.
