Error while trying to synchronize Audio and USB

I'm super new to all this computer stuff and i'm just trying to record real instruments on garageband. About 12 measures into the recording, i'll see a little lag in the recording and then this error message pops up

"Sample Rate 36260 recognized.

Check conflict between Garageband and external device"

The only option it gives me is to continue and then stop the recording myself. I've tried to keep recording even after the error pops up, but this horrible distortion noise starts up once i click continue and won't stop until i cease the recording.

I've tried turning my airport off and my bluetooth.

And I've read about changing the buffer size, but i don't really know what that is or how to change it.

I'm running on Snow Leopard 10.6.8

And the mic I'm using is a standard USB mic that came with Rock Band.

Please help! Any suggestions or advice would be highly appreciated.

okay, this is what happens.

I'll plug in my USB mic and garageband will recognize it and so on. I'll start recording, but then after a few measures the recording will lag and that error message would pop up.

Same story with the software instruments. except ONCE i was able to record with the software for a longer amount of time, therefore giving me a chance to stop the recording when i was ready. but then during playback it lagged and the error popped up again.
