How much ram can I install in new MBP?

I'm getting conflicting info from the interweb.

I'm going to buy either a 27" top end iMac or the top end MBP, and I've read that I can install 16 GB of ram in the MBP....

Is this true?

Thx

Here is objective proof of 16GB RAM Support for MacBook Pro 15" from Intel specs.

The processor in the late 2011 MBP is an Intel i7-2675QM 2.2GHz from this site.

For the mid-2011 iMac, the processor is a Intel i7-2600 3.4GHz again from primatelabs.ca.

The max RAM for a 2011 iMac is 32GB from the Intel specs i.e. the iMac has 4 memory slots, so that is 4x8GB=32GB.

This has been a very interesting, and helpful process.... thanks.

Unfortunately I'm no closer to knowing what I'm going to do.

May I ask a follow up?

I edit video. What does RAM play in my workflow? Processor? Harddrive?

So many questions. I only use the machine... I don't claim to understand them. But before I shell out another $3,000+ on another computer, I think I'd like to know more.

I would love to be able to get 3 years out of a computer, but 2 is what I'm averaging.

In my opinion, unless you need the portability of a MacBook Pro, you will be better off with a high-end iMac.

If you are serious about video editing, then, an iMac or perhaps, a Mac Pro tower will serve you better overtime.

If you decide on an iMac, I suggest a dual-drive, SSD and hard drive configuration.

For editing of HD video, all hardware components will throttle your workflow. This is a question you can ask at the FCP forum.
