I am trying to stream video from my MacBook Pro (2011) to my Sharp LCD TV. The video works great but I can't get the audio out to work.
I am using a Monoprice DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and a regular 6' HDMI cable.
When I go to the Sound preferences I see no option to configure audio from HDMI.
Any help is appreciated.

I think my message above will help you fix the problem. You just need a newer adapter. I had the same issue.
There is no 'mini displayport' on my MBP - just a DVI. I can find the $24.99 mini displayport to HDMI "with audio support" adaptor online, but no DVI to HDMI adaptors that list audio support.
Ahhh...I missed that detail. Wish I could help more, but it does sound like one of those features that suddenly disappear unnecessarily.

Also had to hold option key and click sound icon, then choose my television instead of internal speakers.
I was having all of these problems as well. And when I figured out the solution though my iMac's settings, the audio was still a split second delayed when I was playing my videos. I use VLC, and just realized that VLC has its own option through the audio tab to use HDMI as the audio output. Now everything is synced flawlessly. No need to download anything new. Hope this helps some of you.
