HDMI audio out with MacBook Pro (2011)

I am trying to stream video from my MacBook Pro (2011) to my Sharp LCD TV. The video works great but I can't get the audio out to work.

I am using a Monoprice DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and a regular 6' HDMI cable.

When I go to the Sound preferences I see no option to configure audio from HDMI.

Any help is appreciated.

JUST got off the phone with the tech with the same problem...

When the thunderbolt to hdmi connector is connected to the laptop and the tv:

apple - system preferances - sound - output (then select the appropriate whatsisnot)

I got the callback from the expresslane tech when i was at work, and have not had the oppurtunity to hook it up yet, but I was assured that when all the devices are connected, the option to output to the TV will show up, and not just the "internal speakers" which is the only option present when all is not connected.

Will let you know, sports fans....

Try this..

SMC RESET

  • Shut down the computer.
  • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
  • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
  • Release the power button.
  • Attach the computers power cable.
  • Press the power button to turn on the computer.

PRAM RESET

  • Shut down the computer.
  • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  • Turn on the computer.
  • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
  • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  • Release the keys.

FYI, I have a MacBook Pro (2013) Retina 15" with an HDMI port. When I connected an HDMI cable from the MacBook to a TV, the video was fine, but there was no audio. I followed the first suggestion from parker612 above and now the audio works fine. After connecting the cable, go to the following:

- System Preferences

- Sound pane

- Output tab

- Select the HDMI port for sound output (note that this option doesn't show until the cable is plugged in on both ends and the TV is powered on)

2006 MacBook Pro 15" with DVI port - got $3 DVI to HDMI Adaptor which originally worked, then upgraded to Lion - now at 10.7.5 - and lost audio after one of the updates (can't remember which one).

Tried SMC and PRAM resets - no help.

HDMI used to show up as an output option in Sound panel - no longer.

HDMI does not appear as an option in Audio MIDI Setup utility.

Difficult to find audio pass-through option among DVI to HDMI adaptors for sale - some higher-priced options ~$80 found which really just separate out audio to separate jack for which an additional cable is then needed to bring audio to TV.

Frustrating to realize this was once an option which became deactivated by something Apple did without explanation or warning. It is becoming more frequent that updates take away something that simply worked and no effort is made to restore the lost functionality. Worse, additional purchases are made necessary to restore the function. Poor business ethics at best.
