Won't let me add new user

Can anyone help me out here? When I try to create a new user account in System Preferences, nothing happens. The lock is open, and when I click on the "+", the button depresses, but nothing happens. There are already two accounts on the computer, but I wanted to add a new one for our son. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure what is going on but here are some thoughts.

Whenever I have difficulty first I Reset the PRAM (from a cold start hold down Command + Option + P + R while you hit the Power button and allow to chime 3 to 5 times then release and allow to start.

If that does not work I would try Repairing Disk Permissions from Disk Utilities.

Post back with comments or questions.

Good luck.

Hi ransac7:

I had similar problems with a G3 iMac. It started with the computer freezing when I tried to change the screen saver, then I discovered I couldn't add any users. I tried all the usual troubleshooting, with no success. When I put the hard drive in another identically configured iMac, all the problems went away, so I'm left thinking it's a problem with the logic board.

I hope that isn't the case with your computer, but if you're under warranty, you should have the board tested.

For details of what I went through, go here

Good luck!

Hi all,

I'm having the same issue:

I'm the admin, can't create new user in Sys Pref, lock is open, + button depresses and nothing happens. I created a new user months ago, and was able to delete it. I haven't added or modified anything that didn't come from the OS software update.

I'm running OS 10.3.9 on a Dual 1Ghz G4, 512 MB RAM, Mirrored door model.

I've rebooted, reset the PRAM, and verified and repaired disk permissions. What else can I do? I've been working for months with no problems, this came out of the blue.

How did the rest of you solve your issues?
Would a logic board suddenly go bad like this?

Thanks for your help
