I was having the same problem. Iphoto and the other photo apps would not recognize my device, neither did itunes. I downloaded an app 'photo transfer app' to both my mac and iphone and for $4.99 I was able to easily access and transfer all my pics with high resolution. Try it!

Did you see my response to greg? That's what I did and it worked!

For my case, I just updated my Itunes for my Mac and it instantly solved the issue.
