Airport Extreme Hard drive disconnecting randomly

Hi All

I have an Apple Airport Extreme base station and everything is working fine on my home WiFi - except the fact that my 1TB WD hard drive keeps randomly disconnecting from the network. I have to power it down, then back for it to be seen by the network. The light is still on on the front, and I can still see the drive from the Airport Utility-Disk tab, it's just not available on my network.

I am on version 7.6

The drive will be available for some time, then will randomly disappear. I have tried several USB cables, the same thing happens.

I read that there might be an issue with v 7.4.1, but has this not been fixed in 7.6 ?

Can anyone offer any advice please? Thanks

I was having the external HD dismounted (disconnected) until I unchecked "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" in System Preferences > Energy Saver

I have found a fix for my situation.

I need to eject the drive from finder before putting my MBA to sleep. When opened it connects OK.

My old TimeCapsule does the same thing, usually every 121 seconds.
Keeps on disconnecting until I reboot it.

Does it even when no backup is running.

It has an internal 4TB Hitachi DeathStar.

Thanks for reply. Be sure and post your result with powered hub, if it works for you I may take your lead and try it also ;-)

I have the same issue. 2 macs running Mountain Lion. External has own power supply. I do have a powered hub, I'll see if it works for me.

This problem went away months ago. Not sure why. Did a semi-clean upgrade to Lion (no Migration Assistant, but kept filthy home directory). Then upgrade to Mountain Lion.

check power settings on the drive it may be in power saving mode hence it drops off
