I have subscribed to iTunes match and have a fairly large library 15000 tracks
. iTunes has been gathering information for around two hours (step 1) but the
Status bar for step 1 has completed to the end of the bar . In the activity monitor
The mac is still searching through my tracks . How long should this process take
Or do I have a problem

It depends. There is no single answer to your question. The process will finish when it gets done. Step 1 took me about 3 hours. Step 2 took another couple hours for me, and step 3 took about 3 weeks to upload my non-matched tracks.

I started iTunes match Wednesday night. Step 1 took about 4 hours. Step 2 took about another 4 hours. It's STILL doing step 3 and it's now Friday night. I have just under 20K songs in my library. Interesting to read all the posts about the Beatles songs. I'm a Beatles collector and quite a few of the songs in my library are Beatle related, out-takes, unrleased etc. I think that's why it's taking so long. It can't match any of it so it's uploading. I just hope it finishes before Monday. I have to go out of town for a week and was looking forward to having my entire library in the cloud to take with me!
I waited almost 48 hours with no progress for step 1 (which is why I went after this thread). As soon as I restarted iTunes the bar started making progress, so that did it for me.
Thanks for the tip, marq! Apple needs to fix that.
