Quicktime missing software?

What movies/clips are you trying to watch, and what format are they in? QuickTime can play a lot of formats, but by no means all of them, so perhaps what you're trying to view isn't a format that QuickTime can handle.

Open the file using QT Player and then open the Movie Info window.
It will show what codecs and formats are used in the file.
Use Google or http://versiontracker.com to help you decide what you need for playback.
QuickTime files are held in "containers" that simplify delivery. The only trouble you're having is that the vendors of some of the codecs don't subscribe to, or even consider, the QuickTime component download specifications.
This happens most often in older Microsoft container formats like .avi. It has no rules and no support (even from Microsoft).

I have this issue with movies encoded in DVCPRO-100. Straight from Final Cut Pro HD, these files won't play in QT 7.0.4.

It seems that QT doesn't have this Codec available. We missed this SERIOUS issue due to having FCP installed on all the boxes we viewed files on. Apparently FCP installs this Codec and QT uses it transparently.

Not cool.

I am getting the same error message and blank white screen with quicktime as the original post in this string. I have narrowed it down and Quicktime is not recognizing the Apple intermediate codec. I reinstalled iMovie 6, now every other program that uses the Apple Intermediate Codec now works, but not Quicktime. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can get Quicktime link to the codec?

Allen (and Paul), I'd suggest you start a new thread with your topic. Your issue may not be the same as the original poster (we don't know what format the movies he's trying to view are in), so the answer to your question may be different.

i am not sure if you can help me regarding my problem. i hope so. i recently downloaded a .avi movie. how come i can not play it? all i see is a white screen with no sound. i always receive this message saying "cannot play movie because it lacks the necessary software". what should i do?

Look at the link below for instructions on identifying the video and audio types within the avi file and then download and install suitable codecs. I'm reasonably confident that whatever you need for your avi will be linked from this page. 🙂

There are download links for components.

And there are instructions for running QuickTime Player in Rosetta for use with non-Universal components (which aren't otherwise Mac Intel compatible.)

it did not resolve the problem. i want a link that will show a step by step process of how to resolve the file. it just brings me to a whole lot of links. it was very circuitous.

How to Identify the file*, video and audio** format of a movie or sound file

In QuickTime Player
Open the file
Window menu > Show movie info
Look in the Format: field
Note that QuickTime Player may fail to display any audio information for some files.

In MPlayer OSX:
Show the playlist window if it isn't already visible.
Drag the movie file into the playlist window.
Select the movie in the list
Click the "i" button for info

In VLC
Open the movie in VLC
Window menu > Info
Click the black triangles so that they point down
Note that VLC does not display the file format, only the format of the content (audio and video) within the file. A file ending in .divx for instance, is probably in actuality an avi file but VLC doesn't show that information - MPlayer will and QuickTime Player will - if - QuickTime Player will open the file to begin with.
