error loading kernel in SUM

My hardrive is very unstable.

I am trying to copy off the user folder at minimum.

I am able to pull the drive out of the G5 and put it in a USB external enclosure.

I can get it to show up as an external but after a few minutes of copying the files off the drives crashes.

I have tried booting into singel user mode but I get a "error loading kernel 'mach_kernel' (0x7).

See attached photo.

1. Is there anything else I can do to copy the files off?

2. Would Data Rescue 3 help?

The DW report confirms my suspicion that the issue is more than a simple data issue..... you have damaged sectors/sector errors that may or may not be repairable with an erase and zeroing of the drive.

This, of course, is not what one wishes to do with non-backed data present.....

The drive is NOT to be trusted and should be treated as terminal.

Even IF you can complete an A&I, then there is still the issue of whether or not a prolonged copy process is possible or not.

Copy what you can as soon as you can.

It is highly recommended that you backup all of your data from the preview disk.!

Very sound advice.

Don't delay.

Well, it looks like DW got it's information from the Journal on the Disk, and it found no files or folders.

I think your only hope is either trying DW Scavenge again, or using PC Software or HW to try a Sector by sector copy of that whole drive, then attempting rebuilding the copied drive or Data Rescue on the copy... looking dim though, sorry. 😟
